China says hello T

he Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the Republic of South Africa, Mr Zhong Jianhua and his wife Ms Lu Qingjiang, visited the Tubatse area on Tuesday. Platinum Gazette caught up with Ambassador Zhong and his party at Tubatse Chrome in Steelpoort, where they were engaged in an information session with management. After the meeting the party took a bus tour of the plant. Ambassador Zhong told the newspaper that as the custodian of the interests of the People’s Republic of China in South Africa, he takes an interest in the activities Chinese companies in the country. He visited the area to gain first hand knowledge about the well being of the Chinese companies and their interests in our area. Earlier the day Ambassador Zhong and his party visited ASA Metals at Dilokong where a new pelletising and sintering plant has been commissioned recently and where a new smelter is all but on the bring of production. Sinosteel, a Chinese steel conglomerate mainly controlled by the state, has a 60 percent stake in ASA Metals, the other 40 percent is held by Limdev (Limpopo development Corporation). Tubatse Chrome is a joint venture between Samancor Chrome and Sinosteel, with each partner having 50 percent in the plant at Steelpoort and Tweefontein Mine.

ASA Metals’ new smelter at Dilokong started showing life this week. The new smelter is part of an extensive expansion programme at Dilokong and is an addition to the old smelter on the right, which is somewhat dwarfed by the new facility. This facility was also visited by the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to South Africa, Mr Zhong Jianhua, on Tuesday when he visited the area. A new pelletising and sintering plant is already in production at Dilokong.

Sekhukhune District Municipality executive mayor, Cllr Mogobo David Magabe, handing over an IDP Braille document to the municipality’s special programmes officer, Thembi Kabini. Greater Sekhukhune District Municipality (GSDM) has launched the first Integrated Development Plan (IDP) document in Braille to enable blind people to read and understand government’s plans for their communities. The district decided to transcribe the 2009/10 IDP document into Braille after receiving complaints from people with eyesight impairments during IDP consultations that they could not understand government’s project plans. GSDM Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for the Planning and Local Economic Development (LED) department, Joe Motene said during the launch on Thursday that the IDP document was only the beginning of a process to ensure that people with disabilities have access to information and able to participate in government’s planning programmes. “Other documents will also have to be translated into Braille. We will send these documents to our five local municipalities (Elias Motsoaledi, Marble Hall, Fetakgomo, Tubatse and Makhuduthamaga) because they all have operational Disability Forums,” Motene said. The district has produced 20 copies of the 2010/11 IDP document in Braille, and the purpose is to produce more and distribute them to various centres.

Rabies awareness campaign a huge success

A rabies awareness day in Kgautswane, which was presented gby the department of Agriculture and the department of Health in Tubatse, was very well attended. People gathered at the tribal offices. Close to 200 people squeezed into the small hall at the tribal offices (photograph right)and officials of the two departments had to be seated in adjacent room because of the space problem (bottom photograph). The information session about rabies in animals was presented by the state veterinarian for Tubatse and Fetakogomo, Dr Florence Makgamata, while rabies in humans was carefully explained by Mr M S Marobane of the department of Health and Social Services. The information session was follwed by a question and answer session when the community had the opportunity to ask anything about the disease they were still uncertain of. The campaign was closed by a demonstration of dogs getting vaccinated against rabies and members of the community were also offered the opportunity to have their dogs vaccinated.

And still going strong to become 111 years of age... Mrs Bafodile Mopane was born in Mokutung village more than a century ago and is still, living there. Mrs Mopane still enjoys good health and she can still walk, see, hear and eat, living a quiet life at the foot of the mountain. Speaking to Platinum Gazette this week in the company of one of her daughters and a grandson, she says she is happy and that she believed all her life not to harm other people. She had eight children, five sons and three daughters. Six of her children has passed away and now only two daughters are left. She is not doing much these days, but still enjoys healthy meals, such as fruit and fruit juice. When she does not feel to well her family or friends see to it that she gets medical attention, “but it does not happen regularly” says her grandson, Mr Immanuel Mopane, who is the village headman. She also loves ice cream and listens to the radio every now and then. Her grandson says she has friends who come and visit her and she and an even older man used to visit each other regularly “unfortunately he does not have proof of his age”. Now “they do not have the legs to walk to each other”. Mrs Mopane said she longs for the days when the people of Mokutung still singed and danced traditional dances down in the valley ....

Thorburn rewards personnel On 21 August 2009 Thorburn Security Solutions security officers received certificates and rewards for excellent service performed at Mototolo JV Concentrator Plant and the Angloplat Der Brochen Project in the Eastern Limb. A rewards function was held at the Tubatse Chrome Club where various certificates for service excellence, training, attendance and exceptional work performance were presented to the Thorburn staff. The training certificates included certificates for the very important aspects of Workplace Safety and Risk Identification and Human Rights. In his address Thorburn Managing Director, Dolf Scheepers, confirmed the importance of the reward system in the company and the loyalty it creates as well as its contribution to continuously improve on service delivery. “The quarterly reward system which is the norm in the Eastern Limb was recently held at Modikwa Platinum as well. It is our way of saying thank you to our staff in a formal manner. This is in addition to our special loss prevention bonus system payable for individual success and in addition to our monthly performance bonus added to our wages. We are proud to pay our people what they deserve. Recently we saw various successes which ranges from arrests and preventions at Modikwa, a copper cable loss prevention at ASA Metals and arrests at Vanchem Vanadium Products in Witbank”, Scheepers added. The Thorburn staff was honoured with the presence of Mr William van Rensburg (Protection Services Supervisor at the Angloplat Mototolo JV Concentrator Plant) and Cornel du Plessis, the Angloplat Der Brochen Project Land Manager who afterwards joined the staff for lunch at Tubatse Chrome Club. ‘I want to draw’ 19 year old Kenneth Mahlake is a learner at Kgaola High School at Mokutung, and he proudly displayed his drawings to Platinum Gazette when the newspaper visited the area this week. Kenneth, an orphan who stays with relatives, believes he has a talent for art and he hopes to get an opportunity to make a living from art or a related field such as signwriting when he leaves school at the end of grade 12 this year. Kenneth says he always liked to draw things, since he was a small boy, and he enjoys drawing a range of subjects, ranging from politicians, cars and girls.

Thousands raised for charity Burgersfort went all out for charity on 29 August when the Miss Spring Burgersfort Charity Fun Day was held in front of the OK Minimark. A staggering R11 175 could be paid over towards charity after the effort of the day. A flee market, jail and bail and donation point for clothing and food formed part of the day. Camp Calvin rocked! Calvin College had their revue last week Thursday and Friday evenings. Colourful costumes, vibrant and energetic moves and songs with rhythm combined to give a winning performance. Even Afrikaans got a turn when the pupils depicted the popular ‘Kaptein’ as sung by singer Kurt Darren. How can job creation be stimulated? Platinum Gazette this week visited Mokutung Village with the opinion question. We asked residents how they feel the government can stimulate job creation, especially in the rural areas?

Ms Patricia Mphogo Makgata said: “The government must develop rural areas then the people will be employed. They must use the natural resources like the slate here. It can be used for tiles and this effort will give jobs”.

Mr Raymond Ngwatle said: “They must first bring electricity. Then we will be able to start our own mining projects”.

“They must bring electricity first and with it the people can create their own jobs. They must also look at the cellphone network reception. People must be able to communicate to get jobs,” said Mr Godfrey Khoza and Mr Dennis Masete.

Ms. MN Mmangena said: “They must collect the tile-stones in the mountain and sell it. We must however first get transport and electricity”.

Ms Luzbeth Komane said: “There are beautiful flat stones in our mountain. They can arrange a factory to sell the stones as paving. They can maybe look at the roads so that they can bring business to this side”.

Ms Lydia Sithole said: “They can make projects like bringing electricity. The people will earn something during the project”.

Ms Susan Mangena said: “They must empower people to start small businesses”.

Mnr Dan Mphogo sê: “Hulle moet ontwikkeling bring want die projekte sal werk bring”.

Mnr. William Phukutje sê: “Hulle moet myne maak. Dan kan al die mense by die myne gaan werk”.

Ms. Daisy Mashanye said: “They must make a road then the people can work constructing it”.

Mr Humphrey Kgwedi said: “They must bring shopping centres. That will give jobs. They must focus on the rural areas as people are moving away to get jobs because there are not any here”.

Mr Doctor Mahlake said: “There are a lot of things to do. On top of the mountain there is the slate. They must start projects with it in rural areas”.

Die wedstryd het in ‘n goeie gees plaasgevind en plek-plek is daar sommer van die geleentheid gebruik gemaak om die jong spelers ‘n bietjie meer touwys te maak. Die wedstryd het by Steelpoort Akademie plaasgevind.

Better Ball competition played at club Nadine Fourie was one of the female players of the day.

Tubatse Chrome Golf Club had a ‘Better Ball’ competition on Saturday 29 August. The day was won by Johan Swanepoel and Joost Eksteen with Johan Holscher and Rob Higgs second and Koos and Mariëtte Laas third. The club management was very excited about the women who came to play and invited other women to also come and join. This weekend an ‘Around the World’ day will be held. Die wedstryd is by Laerskool Burgersfort gespeel. Krieket is nog ‘n relatiewe jong sport by die skool, maar maak reeds geskiedenis deur drie meisiespelers in die span in te sluit.

Karate Kampioenskappe by Modikwa Die plaaslike Global Shotokan Karate Klub het ‘n vriendskaplike toernooi by Modikwa Platinum myn aangebied. Klubs van Johannesburg, Sekunda, Witbank, Hoedspruit, Ermelo en Delmas het hier kom deelneem. Die Burgersfort groep het baie goed gedoen in beide Komite en Kata in die onderskeie ouderdomsgroepe. “Baie dankie vir Modikwa vir die gebruik van die lapa en vir Willie Spangenberg vir al die reëlings,” sê me. Comeback kings! Maatlapo United FC played their SAFA SAB Regional league game against Mooihoek XI Experience on Saturday 29 August. Maatlapo United (in the white and red) made an impressive comeback during the second half of the game to triumph over the home team, Mooihoek XI Experience. The game started off with both teams turning on the pressure while they were fresh. Maatlapo United missed golden opportunities to score, especially during

the first half. Discipline unravelled within the teams and various yellow cards were awarded during the match. The first goal of the match was scored by the captain of Mooihoek XI Experience in the 18th minute of the game. During the 42nd minute Maatlapo missed out on a free kick and at half time the score was still 1-0 in favour of Mooihoek XI Experience. Early in the second half, the Mooihoek team scored again when they took

advantage of a loose ball. This only strengthened the Maatlopo United team’s efforts and they finally found the back of the net via the boot of Billy, player number 11. As time started running out, Maatlapo scored again to even the score. Thapelo Moropane from Maatlapo United turned out to be the hero of the match after he scored a second goal to give the team a win. He was named the man of the match. This weekend Maatlapo United will be

playing against Sekhukhune Celtic from Nebo. The match will take place at 15:00 at the Ntoampe stadium in Moroke. “We appeal to all our supporters to come and boost the team with their presence,” said Mr Jimmy Makola, PRO of Maatlapo United. On 12 September the team will face Tubatse United in Praktiseer. The team is also one of the four teams that will be playing in the next round of the Nedbank Cup.
