Instructions to Candidates In the boxes above, write your centre number, candidatenumber, the paper reference, your surname, other names and signature. The paper referenceis shown in the top left-handcorner. lf more than one paper referenceis shown, you should write the one for which you have been entered. PHY3 consists of questionsA and B. Each question is allowed 35 minutes plus 5 minuteswriting-uptime. There is a further 10 minutes for writing-upat the end. The Supervisorwill tell you which experiment to attempt first. Write all your results, calculationsand answers in the spaces provided in this questionbooklet. In calculationsyou should show all the steps in your working, giving your answer at each stage.

Information for Candidates The marks for individual questions and the parts of questions are shown in round brackets. The total mark for this paper is 48. The list of data, formulae and relationships is printed at the end of this booklet.

Question A (a) (i) You are to determinethe volume V of the Plasticeneby a displacementmethod' Shape the Plasticene so that it will fit into the measuring cylinder. (You are advisedto wear a disposableglove.)After you have shapedit, measureits massm.

Now place sufficient water in the measuringcylinder to ensurethat the Plasticene is fully immersed. This may take several trials. Draw diagrams showing the sequenceof your experimental arrangementsand record all your measurementsin the spacebelow.

Stateany special precautionswhich you took when determining Z.

Use your valuesof m and V to calculatea value for the densityof Plasticene.

(ii) Calculatethe percentageuncertaintyin your value for V.

Manufacturersquote the density of Plasticeneas 1800kg - ' (1.8g cm-3)t l0%. Calculatethe percentagedifferencebetweenyour value for the density and that quoted by the manufacturers.

Assuming that the percentage uncertainty in the mass is negligible, comment on the extent to which the Plasticene vou used meets the manufacturers' specification.

Set up the circuit as shown in the diagram below. Before connectingto the power ,rrppiy, have your circuit checkedby the Supervisor. You will be allowed a short any faults. If you are unable to setup the circuit the Supervisorwill time to "oo..t set it up for you' You will lose only two marks for this'

(2) (ii) Connect the voltmeter between points A and C to measurethe terminal potential difference /69 of the power supply. T/

I/ AC:

Now connect the voltmeter between points B and C to measure the potential difference Zs6 acrossthe light dependentresistor(LDR).

Hence calculatethe potential difference VB acrossthe 1.0kO resistor.

Calculate the current 1 in the circuit and the resistanceR of the LDR.

(c) Determinethe vertical height fr through which the trolley lnovesas it travelsa distance of 0.80m down the runway. Draw a diagramto show how this heightwas determined.

n: ........... Using the massof the trolley, which is given on the card, calculatethe potentialenergy Eo lost by the trolley as it moves through the height ft.

Using your results from part (a), determine the kinetic energy Ey gainedby the trolley as it moves down the runway.

In this experimentit is expectedthat Eo: Eu t fr where fr is a constant. Calculatea value for k
