By the end of this course, participants will have a basic knowledge of what phonetics is and be prepared to apply their knowledge to learning to understand and speak a foreign language.

Students who have completed the course will be able to: 1. explain the anatomical mechanism by which normal human speech sounds are produced 2. distinguish and identify the consonant sounds used in standard English pronunciation plus at least a dozen other consonants and explain what makes each consonant distinct from the others 3. distinguish and identify the eight primary cardinal vowels and demonstrate some knowledge of vowel modifications. 4. explain the difference between phonetic transcription and orthography and be able to produce a basic phonetic transcription of simple utterances using the sounds studied in 2 & 3 5. be able to read phonetic transcriptions of short utterances using the sounds studied in 2 & 3 and accurately reproduce them vocally 6. show an awareness of the possible roles of tone and intonation in speech 7. demonstrate increased confidence in hearing and reproducing speech sounds.
