TERMINOLOGY SWITCH/PBX:
The telephone system as a whole is called a switch or PBX. Your switch is a Nortel Meridian Option _____. Nortel is the manufacturer, meridian is the brand name and Option ____ is the size of the switch
PORT:
A port is an address in the switch where a phone is located. A port is also called a terminal number.
CARD:
Each card in the switch has a card in it. Analog and digital cards have 16 ports or addresses on them. That means you can have 16 phones programmed on each analog or digital card.
ANALOG:
All fax machines and modems are analog devices. Single line telephones are also analog. Analog phones and devices are programmed on a different card than digital phones.
DIGITAL:
all multi-line phones or phones with features are considered digital phones. Digital phones use different cards than analog phones.
TN:
Terminal Number. A terminal number is the position or address on a card. For example, if a phone’s TN is 7 6, this means the phone is on card 7, position or port 6.
DN:
Directory Number.
CONSOLE:
The console is the main answering position for your company.
TRUNK:
A trunk is a line that comes from the telephone company that allows you to make calls.
LOAD OR OVERLAY:

A “Load” is a program you go into to access different information. The Option 11 has over 100 loads. A load is also called an overlay.
REFERENCE GUIDES The Nortel manuals are commonly known as NTP’s or Northern Telecom Publications. The most frequently used manuals are:
1)
Feature documentation Explains feature interaction, packaging and operation. This manual will give a very detailed explanation of each and how it works.
2)
Administration programs This manual will explain how to program the loads.
3)
