The Queen and I Nahid Persson Sarvestani was born and raised in Iran. In Sweden, she began formalized study of television and film production and in 2003 attended Dramatiska Institutet. She has made films in Iran under dangerous conditions, among them Prostitution Behind the Veil, an Emmy-nominated documentary for which the Iranian authorities detained her for more than three months. This and other films have made Sarvestani the most awardwinning documentary filmmaker in Swedish history. When Nahid Persson Sarvestani, an Iranian exile, set out to make a documentary about Farrah, the wife of the shah of Iran, she expected to encounter her opposite. As a child, Nahid had lived in dire poverty, watching Farrah’s wedding as if it were a fairy tale. As a teenager, she joined the Communist faction of
Farhad Foroutanian From Holland
Khomeini’s revolution that deposed the shah, sending him and his family volleying from country to country. When Khomeini betrayed his promise for democracy, imposing more violent measures than the shah had, Nahid was also forced to flee. Thirty years later, she needs key questions answered and goes directly to the source. Surprisingly, Queen Farrah welcomes her as a fellow refugee from their beloved homeland, granting unprecedented access. Over the next year and a half, Nahid enters the queen’s world, planning to challenge the shah’s ideology; instead, she must rethink her own. When Nahid’s
prior opposition to the shah surfaces, the queen shuts down filming. Yet, in the struggle to understand each other’s experiences, an unlikely friendship has blossomed. Confronting Farrah about the shah’s repression has become not only a political conflict but a personal one, and Nahid’s objectivity is shaken. I n this gripping, poignant consideration of subjectivity as truth, we learn that people write history. And can also heal it. The Queen and I couldn’t be more relevant as we reach across our own political aisles.
Bam Citadel
The Arg-é Bam in Persian, "Bam citadel" was the largest adobe building in the world, located in Bam, a city in the Kerman province of southeastern Iran. It is listed by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage Site "Bam and its Cultural Landscape". This enormous citadel on the Silk Road was built before 500 BC and remained in use until 1850 AD. It is not known for certain why it was then abandoned. The entire building was a large fortress in whose heart the citadel itself was located, but because of the impressive look of the citadel, which forms the highest point, the entire fortress is named the Bam Citadel. Citadel design and architecture The planning and architecture of the citadel are ingeniously thought out
from different points of view. From the present form of the citadel one can see that the planner(s) had foreseen the entire final form of the building and city from the first steps in the planning process. During each phase of building development the already-built part enjoyed a complete figure, and each additional part could be "sewn" into the existing section seamlessly. The citadel is situated in the center of the fortress-city, on the point with widest view for security. All buildings are made of non-baked clay bricks, i.e. adobes. Bam Citadel was probably, prior to the 2003 earthquake, the biggest adobe structure in the world. In the architectural form of Bam Citadel there are two different distinguishable parts: The rulers' part in the most internal wall, holding the citadel, barracks, mill, 4-sezonan house, water-well (dug in the rocky earth and about 40 meters deep), and a stall for 200 horses. The ruled-over part surrounding the rulers' place, consisting of the main entrance of the entire fortress-city and the bazaar alongside of the North-to-South spinal axis (which connects the main entrance to the citadel), and around 400 houses with their associated public buildings (such as a school and sport place). Air conditioning
Besides the watch towers and ornamented tops of the high walls on the skyline of the fortress, the wind-catchers are remarkable. They are structures protruding from the buildings to catch the wind and direct it into the buildings. Sometime the air is passed over a water basin in the building to cool it and remove dust. Different types of wind towers are utilized for different buildings. For example there are 4directional wind-towers for larger and more important buildings, which are able to catch the wind from different directions, and there are one directional wind towers for smaller buildings. The 2003 Earthquake in Bam destroyed more than 80 percent of the Citadel. As a World Heritage site several countries are cooperating in the reconstruction. Japan, Italy, and France are among countries which cooperated from the beginning. Japan has granted some 1,300,000 US dollars to Iran for the reconstruction, and has supported this project by sending equipment and creating the 3D plan of Bam Citadel to increase the accuracy of the renovation. Italy has funded 300,000 US dollars in the salvation project, and has dispatched a team of experts to restore the main tower of Bam. France has helped Iran by providing the map of Bam Citadel. World Bank has also granted a large sum of money to this project.

Housing Sales Continue to Trend Upward
Edmonton, June 2, 2009: The REALTORS® Association of Edmonton reports that the number of residential properties sold through the Multiple Listing Service® in Edmonton in May was up over 17% as compared to the previous month and up 18.7% over the same month last year. There were 3,180 residential properties listed with sales of 2,161. The sales-to-listing ratio was 68% as compared to 42% in May 2008. “Sales continue to rise month-bymonth,” said Charlie Ponde, president of the REALTORS® Association of Edmonton. “Listing activity, while not as frantic as last year, is still active so there continues to be a good supply and variety of homes available.” Prices in the local market also continued their slow, steady climb. Single family homes sold on
average* for $367,672 in May; up 4% from last month but still 4% lower than a year ago. Condominiums sold for $244,734 on average which was 3.7% higher than April prices. Condos are still priced 6% lower than last year at this time. The average residential price was $326,332 up 4.6% from last month but down 4.2% from a year ago. “Prices are still lower than last year but rising steadily,” said Ponde. “So house hunters should be making their buying decisions sooner rather than later to ensure that their buying power is not eroded by the rising prices.” He noted that some REALTORS® have been able to present multiple offers to their sellers. At the end of May there were 7,435 homes available in the MLS® System inventory and homes sold, on average, in 52 days (as compared to 51 last month and 53 last May). At
3.4 months, there is a typical amount of inventory available at current sales volumes. Total MLS® System sales in May were 2,395 properties valued at $787 million. Year to date sales are valued at $2.5 billion.
LRT Expansion Will Increase Property Values! According to Campbell, the real estate researcher, the price of homes near LRT stations will improve 10% to 20% more than other areas of the city. He also suggests that homes near extensions to Anthony Henday Drive will increase relatively more in value. The first neighbourhoods to benefit are Belgravia, Parkallen, McKernan, Twin Brooks, Skyrattler, Ermineskin and Blue Quill. With Southgate and Century Park stations scheduled for opening in 2010 the neighbourhoods of Lendrum and Pleasantview will be positively affected. Glastonbury, Aldergrove, Thorncliff and Belmead are areas which will reap the rewards of the expanded Anthony Henday.
