Dangling Participles The rule is that the subject of the main clause must be the same as the person doing the action of the participle. Example: Having finished his homework, it was time for Paul to go to bed. (wrong) Having finished his homework, Paul realized that it was time to go to bed. (correct) The subject of the main clause has to be Paul not it, because Paul is the person who finished in the participle phrase.
