Podria decirse que 10 moderno nace agonizante, pues, como debe ser cada vez mas "moderno", tiende a negarse V destruirse. Marion Jones was in junior high school when she saw Florence Griffith Joyner triumph at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. She decided to take up student athletics and ended up sweeping the board: she never lost one of her 100- or 200-meter competitions. Later she took up relay races and the long jump, where she also came out on top. In Sydney 2000 she was the first woman in history to win five Olympic medals: golds in the 100- and 200-meter and the 4x400 relay races, as well as two bronzes, one in the long jump and the other in the 4x100relay. Today, after having taken time out for her pregnancy, she confidently expects to win another five medals, but this time all golds, which would make her the most 011round female athlete of all time.

With a rising career, top-notch training, results that get better all the time, triumphs all over the world and an iron will, Ana Gabriela Guevara is going to Athens for the one thing she has yet to achieve: an Olympic gold medal. As part of the Mexican delegation in Sydney 2000, Ana Gabriela started to turn heads while running alongside Cathy Freeman. Her fifth Olympic place was particularly striking considering she was practically an unknown, even in her own country. Nobody could have imagined that that rainy September night was to be the start of a career where this Mexican has, stride by stride, become the best 400-meter runner and the world's fastest woman running this distance in the last 20 years. In fact, the last time anyone ran this race in 48.89 seconds was in 1984, which leads us to believe that it is only a question of time before an Olympic medal hangs around her neck.

Twenty-two-year-old Ian James Thorpe is one of the best swimmers there are today. He started competing when he was eight, and at 13he won every junior competition he entered. A year later, he became the youngest Australian to represent his country in the world championships, winning two silver medals in Fukuoka. In Perth, he became the youngest world champion swimmer: he won the 400-meter freestyle and the 4x200. Thorpe has promised to leave Athens 2004 with six gold medals.

Cosas de nuestra historia Una de las intenciones de Guerrero Santos fue dar a sus piezas un canicter hist6rico. De antemano hay que entender que la cenimica en Mexico tuvo un giro dnistico con la llegada de los espanoles. Antes de la conquista, los indigenas la entendian a su modo y tenian en el barro su materia prima por excelencia, pero desconocian los procesos de vitrificaci6n, por ejemplo. "La forma de vivir y comer era diferente", explica Guerrero Santos. "Lo espanol traia la influencia arabe, la influencia oriental. Sabemos tambien que el color tenia un significado dentro de la ceramica peninsular". Por ejemplo, segun las ordenanzas, el

Metal, in the form of nickel silver or copper. is one of the elements that Guerrero Santos, in his tireless search for originalit\, has incorporated into his pieces. But this happened by sheer chance. He recalls, "M. own ignorance made me think of using metal. I didn't know that small cracks often appear in this type of ceramics. They're caused by the heat of the kiln on foreign matter found in the clay. In my first exhibition, I partially covered up a small piece that had a crack in it. Later I was told tha this increases the value of the work; it says a lot about its originality. Another time, I was going to deliver a piece that had two fissures, so I applied nickel silver to it. Thus. without realizing it, I made my own contribution to Mexican handicrafts." It is worth mentioning that Jesus Guerrero Santos' business is a family concern, in which his wife and children are also involved. "Fortunately, we work as a family," he acknowledges. "My wife is an excellent administrator, and one of m. sons helps us; he studied marketing and is opening up channels for us to place our pieces in the appropriate market niche. Another one of my sons is experimenting with modern ceramics." Since most of the artisans working with them in their shop are youths, and the younger generations have been shOWing interest in ceramic art, the Guerrero Santos family has started a project, called Horno (which means kiln), that is open to anyone who wants to learn the trade. "All we ask is that the person is truly interested," adds Jesus Guerrero, reasserting his desire to share his experience and keep an age-old tradition going into the future. Patience, experimentation and discipline, combined with luck and talent, have made this former film promoter into one of the great Mexican potters of our day

Fisuras metcllicas Uno de los elementos Que Guerrero Santos ha venido agregando a sus piezas, en su afanosa busQueda de originalidad, es el metal, ya sea la alpaca 0 el cobre. Pero cabe decir Que este liego a su obra por una cuestion de azar. Recuerda: "Se me ocurrio introducir el metal por ignorancia mia. Yono sabia Que, dentro del trabajo de esta c1ase de ceramica, frecuentemente hay fisuras. Estas surgen al calor del fuego porQue las tierras contienen algun cuerpo ajeno Que no posee su plasticidad. En mi primera exposicion, yo medio tapaba una piecita Que tenia una fisura. Luego me hicieron saber Que eso aumenta el valor de la obra; habla mucho de su originalidad. En cierta ocasion iba a entre gar una pieza Que tenia dos fisuras, asi Que afiadi la alpaca. Asi, sin darme cuenta, hice una aportacion a la artesania mexicana". Cabe destacar Que la firma de Jesus Guerrero Santos es una empresa familiar en la Que tambien estan involucrados su esposa e hijos. "Afortunadamente, trabajamos en familia", reconoce. "Mi mujer es una excelente administradora y un hijo mio nos asiste; es mercadologo y esta abriendo caminos para poder ubicar nuestras piezas en el nicho de mercado apropiado. Otro de mis hijos esta experimentando con formas con temporaneas de ceramica".

En respuesta a la inQuietud Que las nuevas generaciones han mostrado par el arte ceramista, patente en el hecho de Que la mayoria de artesanos Que labaran en su taller son jovenes, la familia Guerrero Santos ha dado vida a Homo, proyecto abierto a Quienes deseen aprender a trabajar dicha artesania. Kangaroo Although legends have spread as to the origin of this funny marsupial's name, the only part that is actually based on fact is that it goes back to the days the English first explored the land down under. When Captain Cook's party asked the locals what the strange animals were called, they answered in the aboriginal language spoken in the area, Guugu Yimidhirr.The outsiders recorded what they heard as "kangooroo", which, of course, eventually became "kangaroo" in English and was adopted by other languages in the 18th century. According to Cicero, the protagonist of our story was a nobleman who lived during the 4th century BC in the court of Dionysius the elder. Damocles so envied the ruler's power and fortune that the latter decided to give him the throne for a day, so he could perform all the tasks of government. Este deseo esta a punto de ser alcanzado, ya que el punto mas lejano, calculado a unos 15 mil millones de anos luz de distancia, sera escudrinado par el GlM, el Gran Telescopio Milimetrico, que marcara una nueva etapa en el conocimiento cientifico. La instalacion de este artefacto se lleva a cabo en el Volcan La Negra, a cuatro mil 600 metros de altura, cerca del Pico de Orizaba. Se ha convertido en uno de los proyectos mas importantes de la comunidad cientifica mexicana, desarrollado por ellnstituto Nacional de Astrofisica, 0ptica y Electronica (INAOE), del Conacyt, y la Universidad de Massachussets, quienes comparten gastos y responsabilidades alSO por ciento. Para conocer los detalles de esta enorme estructura, el doctor Alfonso Serrano, coordinador e investigador principal del proyecto, nos relata como dio inicio la impresionante obra: "La idea nacio hace aproximadamente 15 anos y tiene ocho desarrollandose. Today, however, this search is almost at an end, as the most distant point of the universe, fifteen billion light years away, is about to be examined by the GMT-theGreat Millimetric Telescope-ushering in a new era in scientific discovery. The equipment has been set up at an altitude of 4,600 meters, close to Pico de Orizaba (Mexico's highest mountain), on the La Negra Volcano. One of the most important projects conducted by Mexico's scientificcommunity, it has been developed by the the Conacyt's (National Board of Science and Technology)National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE, its Spanish initials)and the University of Massachusetts, which are splitting expenses and responsibilitiesfifty-fifty. Doctor AlfonsoSerrano, project coordinator and head researcher, explained how this ambitious plan got underway. "The idea first came up about 15years ago, out of the need for a new window through which to study the universe, and we have now spent eight years working on it. What we had at the time was the FrancoGerman telescope, installed in Spain; with a 30-meter diameter, its range fell onethird of the way short of the target. Our telescope has a diameter of 50 meters and will probe further. We hope to go as far as to the origin of the universe."

The Expanding Universe Morethan shedding light on the matter, the expression "origin" or "beginning" of the universe is unsettling for those of us who are not experts in this field. The scientist obligingly offers an explanation. "To start with, we have to remember that light is not an instantaneous event. When we look at the sun, we are not seeing it as it is right now, but rather as it was eight minutes ago, which is how long it takes sunlight to reach Earth. In the vast expanses of space, distance is time. By enabling us to see greater distances, the GMT willalso allow us to see back in time, into the distant past. Thefurthest back we might see isthe origin which, according to the scientificcommunity, dates to about 12to 15billionyears ago, when the 'Big Bang' occurred and everything began to take shape."

Vamos a descubrir como eran los origenes, como surgio, como evoluciono; hay que considerar que nosotros estamos aqui en ultima instancia porque el universo evoluciono haciendo estrelias, galaxias y planetas como el nuestro". Ya habiamos escuchado de algunos expertos que el proyecto del GTM podria equipararse con la llegada del hombre a la luna, 0 el lanzamiento del telescopio Hubble porque, aseguran, marcara una nueva etapa en el conocimiento cientifico. De la informacion que se obtenga desde 10mas remoto del cosmos surgiran nuevas teorias, que a la vez desecharan otras. Mientras un as se avocan al origen, otras se preocupan del final; si bien 10 primero fue provocado por la gran explosion, el Big Bang, en el otro extremo puede haber un Big Crunch, si el universo se contrae.

Whilesome focus on the origin, others are more concerned with the end. The former was the outcome of a vast explosion, the BigBang, but the latter may culminate in a Big Crunch, with the universe contracting.
