Answer guide for O Level Physics (5054/3) – Paper 3 Practical Test November 2000
1(a) (b)(i) (ii) & (c)
(Setting up apparatus – no answer required) Number of spheres used = 10 Volumes recorded with unit and correct calculation of Vs giving a
(d) & (e)
value of between 1.8 cm3 and 2.2 cm3 i.e. Vs = (VT – 50)/(Number of 1 spheres) Masses recorded with unit appearing at least once and correct calculation of ms = (mT - mD)/10 1 Correct calculation of density, 2/3 s.f. and unit 1
(f)
Value 2.25 g / cm3 to 2.74 g / cm3 from correct calculation
2(a)

Correct general arrangement with horizontal line lying between the top of (b) and the bottom of (d) on page 5 and with the object pin labelled as O and 8.0 ± 0.2 cm from the horizontal line X and Y labelled and clear that these have been made by pin holes and in approximately the correct position as judged by eye. Ray completed from M to O. Rays extended back correctly and meeting at I which must be labelled. All rays complete with I greater than 7 cm but less than 9 cm from horizontal line.
Diagram showing correct symbols for power supply, (switch), variable resistor, lamp and (milli)ammeter in series, with voltmeter in parallel with lamp I = 40 mA and V approximately 3 V both with units Correct calculation of R giving sensible value(approximately 80 Ω) I = 50 mA and new V greater than answer at (b) with correct calculation of R. Units required for I, V and R. Increased temperature of wires gives increased resistance

(b) (c) (d)
Readings Reasonable value with unit (setting up apparatus – no answer required) Table with units for θ and t
(e)
Evidence of at least one temperature to better than 1 oC At least 8 readings over a time of 8 minutes 1/2 minute intervals used at least once provided there are more than 8 readings Majority of points form a smooth curve Graph Axes labelled with units and θ plotted against t
(f)

Data occupies ≥ 10 cm vertically and scale does not involve 3,6,7 or 9 Minimum of 5 points plotted ( or all points if data gives < 5 points) and the two furthest from the curve correct provided scale does not involve 3, 6, 7 or 9. Fine line drawn with pencil which is a reasonable fit to the points and fine points or crosses. Straight line through t = 4 minutes or tangent between t = 3.5 minutes and t = 4.5 minutes or straight line which would be parallel to the above tangent Correct calculation of the gradient as determined by correct reading of the sides of the triangle with a base ≥ 8.0 cm and from a reasonable straight line Correct calculation of power using candidate’s gradient 2 or 3 s.f. Value between 1200 J / minute (20 W) and 3000 J / minute (50 W) with unit and positive answer
