Organization and Human Resource Consulting Effective Delegation Steps for Effective Delegation 1. Be specific about the delegated assignment. Think the job through, step by step. Clearly define the end product – exactly what results do you want? What standards will it take to ensure your satisfaction? What options are available to employee, e.g., creativity, different tactics? What are the deadlines? Will you delegate the whole project (advisable) so that the employee can take pride and have a sense of ownership? 2. Choose the right person. Person has the right skills, interest, and time. Person would benefit by developing in this direction. Person will be challenged and stretched, but not unduly taxed. 3. Express confidence in the person. Remember that people will perform up to or down to the level of expectations you have for them. 4. Ask for feedback to make sure the person understands the task. Check for understanding of assignment. Be clear about level of responsibility and authority the person has. 5. Arrange for checkpoints and determine nature of monitoring. 6. Monitor as promised. Make sure the project has been started. Identify obstacles and provide additional resources as needed. Check partial products if that was part of monitoring agreement. Provide feedback as needed. 7. Accept product as completed. Capture lessons learned – What went well? What was troublesome? 8. Actively demonstrate appreciation – say “Thanks.”
