Assess – Cont. A topic may interest an audience for several reasons: 1. It concerns their health, happiness or security; 2. It offers a solution to a recognized problem; 3. It is surrounded by controversy or conflict of opinion; and/or 4. It provides information on a misunderstood or little understood issue. Develop Your Thesis  Thesis – your central idea for the talk, a one-sentence assertive statement.

So, what are the qualities of a good speaker? – Cont. Maintains conversational tone; Enjoys himself/herself; Inspires us to find out more about the subject; Conjures up pictures in our mind; Doesn't talk for hours; Looks at us – not his/her notes; Stresses important points and pauses to allow ideas to sink in; and His/her talk appears well prepared but has an air of spontaneity.

10 Ways to overcome your STAGE FRIGHT! Be well prepared; Rest, eat and sleep well beforehand; Dress appropriately yet comfortably; Take deep breaths to relax your body; Concentrate; Move around and release your nervous energy; Make no negative confessions "I'm so nervous“; Pick out some friendly faces and make eye contact with them; and If you make a mistake you make a mistake, laugh at it and the audience will laugh with you.
