ORACIONES DE FINALIDAD (PURPOSE CLAUSES) Hay tres formas principales de expresar finalidad en inglés. 1.-IN ORDER TO/ TO/ SO AS TO + INFINITIVO Se utiliza cuando el Sujeto de la oración principal es también el Sujeto de la oración principal. -I went to the baker’s to /in order to/ so as to get some bread. (Fui a la panadería para comprar pan) -The thief attacked from behind to/in order to/so as to surprise them. (El ladrón atacó por detrás para sorprenderlos)
La forma negativa se construye con in order NOT to -I drank a lot of coffee in order not to fall asleep. (Tomé mucho café para no quedarme dormido) 2.-SO THAT + SUJETO + MODAL + VERBO Se utiliza cuando el Sujeto de la oración principal es distinto al de la oración de finalidad. -He spoke quietly so that nobody could hear him. (Habló en voz baja para que nadie pudiera oírlo) -I’ve come here so that we can talk. (He venido aquí para que podamos hablar)
La negativa se construye con el modal en forma negativa. -He switched TV off so that the children couldn’t see violent images. (Apagó la television para que los niños no pudieran ver imágenes violentas)
3.-FOR+ PRONOMBRE DE OBJETO + TO INFINITIVO Se utiliza también cuando el Sujeto de la oración principal es distinto a la persona que realiza la acción expresada por el Infinitivo. -I’ve bought a cake for them to eat (He comprador un pastel para que se lo coman ellos)
