1,000 pulis madedestino sa Metro

B

“We are downloading 1,000 RMG officers … That will be only for the yuletide season. We need the RMG as our front liners for terrorism and other serious crimes,” sabi ni Soriano. “We will study where the crimeprone areas are and we will give them the RMG officers,” dagdag

niya.

“This is an international issue because...so many foreigners invested in Boracay. The Philippines does not want a reputation for being a place where property rights are not respected,” ani Arseno.

“One scenario we are monitoring is Quinta might return to the Philippine area of responsibility,” ani Nathaniel Cruz, weather bureau chief ng Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical

and Astronomical Services Administration ( Pa g a s a ) , s a i s a n g panayam sa telepono.

CV Esguerra

Inquirer Read-Along wins Quill By Edson C. Tandoc Jr.

FOR SPREADING passion for reading to more than 4,000 children in just over a year through teamwork and volunteerism within the news organization, the INQUIRER Read-Along project is now recognized as a benchmark of excellence in business communication.

The Philippine Quill, the country’s most prestigious award-giving body for business communicators, handed the award of excellence to the hour-long, bi-monthly undertaking. From more than 200 entries this year, the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines, which gives out the Quill, cited 32 recipients for excellence. The Philippine Daily Inquirer was the only newspaper company named for excellence. The INQUIRER Read-Along won in the economic,

social and environmental development category. “The 2008 Philippine Quill Awards shows us what Filipino communication professionals have been doing the past year when the global downturn began to take effect,” says the IABC Philippines during the program and ceremonies held Friday at the Hyatt Hotel and Casino in Manila. Launched in May 2007, the INQUIRER ReadAlong began as a “simple, low-cost” idea aimed at encouraging public use of the INQUIRER Library, research head Minerva Generalao says. The idea was first called “reading sessions” and was targeted at school children “because we wanted to start the habit of reading while they are still young,” she adds. But how do you make reading fun for children? INQUIRER editor in chief Letty Jimenez Magsanoc renamed the project “INQUIRER ReadAlong” and suggested that celebrities and role models be invited to read stories to pupils.

Problema sa biyenan

DEAR Emily,

Walang masama do’n.

By Pocholo Concepcion A MONO vinyl record of Yoyoy Villame’s Mag-Exercise Tayo in Bisaya, with a rondalla, wafted through the house speakers at the CCP’s Silangan Hall. It must’ve been the original version; since Villame, who was proudly Bisaya, jumpstarted his career in his native Bohol. As the song played on, organizers of the concert Si Lapulapu, Si Rosas Pandan: A Bisaya Musical Extravaganza—set Nov. 22, 8 p.m. at the CCP Main Theater (Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo)—dished out some interesting bits of music history. “Did you know,” asked Bal Endriga, president of concert presenter Kadugong Bisaya Foundation,

“that the song ‘Sa Kabukiran’ by Manuel Velez was originally a Visayan ditty?” Endriga continued, “I felt proud when, in my youth, I learned that the tinikling was the national dance. Until then I had known it as a game we played in Leyte as

V HOST-ACTRESS Alex Gonzaga has the same size of clothes and shoes as her sister Toni.

“My Ate often raided my closet for new outfits, especially when she was so busy with work and had no time to shop. This often happened during ‘ASAP’

previous chat with INQUIRER Entertainment, admitted this. “Alex has funkier taste in clothes. She’s not afraid to try new things. I go for simple things. This is why

she always has better stuff in her than I do,” said Toni. What Toni did not know abou sister was that Alex liked buying similar to what she sees on her fa TV shows. “These days, it’s ‘Sex a the City.’ I like Charlotte (Kristin and Carrie’s (Sarah Jessica Parke fashion sense. Kiko on his battle with cancer

(From Francis M.’s blog, portions of which, like the following, are being circulated via email by concerned friends.) “WHEN YOU HEAR the word bone marrow, the first thing that comes to mind is bulalo. That’s the delicacy that I really love to eat every now and then. “Little did I know that one day my own bone marrow would be extracted. It is quite painful, especially [when] the anaesthesia … is injected. The extraction itself is stressful because even if my backside was numb, I could feel the steel hitting bone. “When I [was told] I had this cancer of the blood … I blurted … ‘S***, I won’t reach 50?’ “Pain is associated with this illness, and you battle it with chemotherapy … What does one do [while having] chemo? Read a book, listen to music, watch TV, DVDs and pray, pray, pray. “For now I am alive, one day at a time.”

AFP

Jackpot hangad ni Pacquiao vs DL Hoya Ni Salven Lagumbay

S A N F R A N C I S C O, C a .

“I’m going to go home and talk to my family and think about it,” sabi ni Calzaghe na tubong Wales. “Hey mom,” ani Calzaghe habang nakaharap sa TV camera.“I love you. I’m sorry if I made you nervous in the first round.”

“He stunned me with a good shot in the first round but that is what champions are all about,” sabi ni Calzaghe. “I’ve been down before but I’ve also got back up.’’ Tulad ng kanyang naunang laban sa US, bumagsak rin si Calzaghe sa first round bago bawian si Bernard Hopkins. “This year I beat two legends. I took the risk. I came to the US and I beat both those guys. Pabor ang tatlong hurado kay Calzaghe, 118-109. Inquirer Wires
