Why did the Industrial Revolution begin in Britain? II. Industrial Revolution- the shift during the 18th century, from making goods by hand to making them by machine. Five major aspects allowed the Industrial Revolution to occur in Britain. A. Natural Resources •

Water power and coal were used to fuel new machines



Iron ore was used to construct machines, tools, and buildings



Rivers were used for inland transport



Harbors were used for merchant ships

B. Population Growth •

Because of the Enclosure movement, fewer farm laborers were needed



Many people moved to the cities



More available workers

C. Economic Strength •

Overseas colonies made Britain’s economy strong



Capital – factors of production used to create good or services(funds used for investing)



Capital was available for the middle class to invest in industry (mines, railroads, factories, etc.)

D. Political Stability •

Stable government



Military and Political success

Even though Britain had been part of various conflicts in the 1700s, none had been on British

E. Energy and Technology •

Britain had experienced an Energy Revolution



New inventions improved available technology

• Britain had all of the FACTORS OF PRODUCTION - the resources needed to produce goods and services that the Industrial Revolution required
