Welsh Global Presents...

Hot off the Press News Update:

‘UK ratifies the EU Lisbon Treaty’

The move came despite doubts over it’s future. All EU states must ratify for the treaty for it to come into force. But Commons leader Harriet Harman insisted it was “in Britain’s interest to be at the heart of Europe and it’s in Europe’s interest that Britain should play a leading part”.

‘Lenders ease mortgage rationing’

It’s become slightly easier for borrowers to take out a mortgage, according to the financial information service moneyfacts. This might be an indication that some mortgage providers have kept an eye on the housing prices, regained some confidence and realigned their outlook towards risk.

‘Decision due on Economic Stimulus’

The Bank of England have already spent £175m on quantitative easing, which involves printing money to buy assets from banks and other companies to stimulate the economy. There are doubts about whether the banks have been lending out the money of using it to bolster their balance sheets.

EU approves Northern Rock split.

Darling Unveils his great bank bailout

The European Union has approved plans for Northern Rock to be split in two.

Treasury hands RBS another £25bn to shore up the balance sheet. Alistair Darling insisted that the bailout would ultimately benefit the banks, their customers and the taxpayer.

The bank will be split into a “good” bank where savings will be half and now lending will commence. The other a “bad” bank which will hold all toxic debt and hold the rest of the mortgages and repay outstanding government loans. However, critics fear that the taxpayer may still be left with losses and the assets that remain. This move is expected by the end of the year. Future plans suggest the selling of the food bank with the revenue returned to the taxpayer

He said he was still concerned that there was no guarantee that the second bailout would result in a renewed flow of credit to businesses and consumers. There are concerns over staff retention at RBS after the government demanded a ban on cash bonuses to anyone earning more that 39,000 a year. Meanwhile the EU has ordered RBS to sell several of it’s most profitable businesses. Investors were more upbeat about Lloyds after it’s Chief Executive, Eric Daniels, said the worst was over for the bank.

Arthur

Well done to Ben Hawkes for recording his bands (The sound tracks) new single ‘A History Boy’

Facebook watch: - After finding lots of friends on facebook sadly, my account was disabled. Facebook doesn’t make allowances for mythical fire-breathing creatures. - I now have a fan page called Arthur’s but I NEED YOUR HELP! I need you to suggest all of your friends.

Hi all, I’ve had a crazy fortnight! Two flying lessons and a trip to Cardiff. I flew there and back with Ian and now have the flying bug! I’m now writing a list of all the places I want to visit! I’m looking in Italy and Portugal at the moment. I’ll keep you updated when I make some plans! I’m going to attempt to fly to Oxford this weekend, that’s double the distance! I’m going to do my exam in two weeks so wish me luck! I’ve been hanging out with the skate boys this week, there’s a girl there that is pretty, I might ask her on a date. I’ve missed the chance to take her out on Bonfire night which is a shame, that would’ve been a romantic date. We’ll see, I’ve got to pluck up the courage to ask her first. My facebook profile has been disabled as they don’t think I’m a real person. So I’ve asked Welsh Global to set up a fan page for me.

The Team @ WG Halloween has brought plenty of scary tales into the office with many of us opting to take part in festivities. Greg is getting close to completing his book iReckon.

Ask Arthur:

Aaron impressed the marketing team with his broad portfolio covering many areas including advertising for events, restaurants and housing.

Hi Arthur, I’ve read on your facebook fan page that you’ve been looking at places to go away for Christmas, I’m keen to take my boyfriend away for the New Year but unsure where to go, Can you help? Jade (22), Bristol

Aaron has fantastic knowledge of print, photography and experience in PR

Hi Jade, I did have a look at places to go but it really depends on whether you want to go somewhere warm or cold. I’m a fan of the warmth so I found the closest place to the UK is Madeira. Its still hot in the winter and the flights aren’t too bad either. Welsh Global have a property there and have said I could go and visit at some point. Hopefully its sooner rather than later, then I can let you know what Madeira is like. My next step is to persuade the parents to go. Thanks Jade, Arthur

He has quickly become a key part of the team with his design of brochures, logo’s and websites.

Youtube - The flooded River Wye - 24 hours in 2.4 minutes

Upon finding some of ‘wyenotnews’ videos on youtube I took a look at his whole collection. This time lapsed video is a captivating surveillance of the River Wye. His music add’s to the speculation and draws you in. An experiment with producing, very simple but powerful. I’ll be staying tuned to see what happens next ...

IS BIG BROTHER ALREADY WATCHING EACH OF US? At present there is a national debate on the introduction of Identity Cards in the United Kingdom. The Government wants ID cards to be introduced and has shown this in its actions. Opposition groups have mobilised and have caused the plans to be currently placed on hold. In addition, there have been some very high profile incidences involving the loss of data held by Government which has played directly into the hands of those seeking to oppose the introduction of ID cards.

Book - Terry Pratchets Discworld - The Colour Of Magic

However the concern lies with the information that is held on each of us by private organisations which is shared. In the UK there are two major credit reference agencies which hold details of virtually every credit transaction every individual makes. Almost every bank account provides at the very least a small overdraft facility. This is a credit transaction which will be registered with at least two major credit reference agencies. Every month, the bank will provide details of your current address and whether you have complied with the terms of your overdraft facility to the credit reference agencies. If you have a contract mobile telephone, the agreement will be a credit transaction which almost certainly will be similarly registered. Again each month your current address is reported to the credit reference agency with details of any default on the agreement. Similar provisions may also apply to your landline.

For fans the following will seem completely normal and for everyone else... The Discworld is a flat disc supported on 4 elephants carried on the back of an enormous turtle called Great A’tuin. At the center of the disc is a huge mountain upon which the Gods (particularly fate & the lady) meddle with the lives of men. The story follows Twoflower who is the discworld’s first tourist along with his faithful luggage and Rincewind - failed wizard and a disc renowned coward. Along the way we meet Death, Hrun the barbarian and Dragons who only exist if you believe in them and a whole host of characters who will go on to star in their own discworld novels. If you are new to Discworld I strongly recommend reading the first two books first as they will give you the basic knowledge of how everything works and will make the following series much more enjoyable. In Comparison to the later books it lacks a little depth but more than makes up for it with comic genius and incredible insight into a bizarre fantasy world.

In the event that an organisation claims that you owe them money, the credit reference agency will handout details of your current address. Not only is that information given to private organisations, but also to both local and central Government. For most this may not be a problem. For others who like to retain a level of confidentiality, nothing can be kept secret. In this modern word there is now no longer anyway to live an anonymous life. Against this there lies two arguments. The one argument is that each of us is a member of society and must be part of that society. If you are part of that society, it is a precondition that all information about you be available. The other argument is that each of us is entitled to privacy and the sharing of information about us is a denial of that privacy. Both arguments have merits. However judging by the opposition in the UK to ID cards, it would follow that there is mass consensus towards retaining privacy. Sadly the valiant fight to retain privacy has been lost. Whist the state may have been denied a universal data base containing all the details of each of us, the private sector has stepped to provide such information which they are openly prepared to share.

What is wrong in having a data base holding all information on each of us?

Asks Chris Miller

For many there is no problem in their information being held on data bases. However in a world where terrorist threats lurk at every corner, information is power. To date there have been no reported incidences of leaks of sensitive information by any of the credit reference agencies. However if our Government can so easily share sensitive information with all comers, it would follow that information held in the private sector would not be exempt from unauthorised disclosure.

What if a terrorist organisation were to access to each of our personal data? The outcome of such action could be too ghastly to contemplate. The solution could simply be for a complete ban on the maintenance of such data bases. Whist the threat of terror remains so prevalent in society and so deeply affects our movements, maybe it would be right for the destruction of the data bases. At least if they were to be destroyed, one major threat to disrupt our lives and all that we hold dear would be removed.

Films -

District 9 2* A film that has got people talking. I enjoyed the cynicism against how the humans would treat an unknown life form. But against the sarcasm I found most of the key messages hidden behind a silly sense of humour. A great film for sci-fi lovers.

Music Album: Radio 1’s Live Lounge : Volume 4 4* Not only does this album has a vast array of acoustic music but its fascinating to hear the covers. I’ve been a fan of all of the live lounge albums and this one is no exception. Singles: ‘A History Boy’ by The sound tracks 5* This new single from the local Bath band is a fantastic beginning for the band. There is only one single out at the moment but more are eagerly awaited on myspace. To check out the band head to www.thesoundtracks.co.uk
