Oakside Neighborhood Crime Watch
The Oakside Neighborhood Crime Watch was established many years ago. No record of the exact year is available. The role of the Watch is not one of security or crime fighting but one of crime prevention. Block Captains are volunteers and act as liaison for their neighbors. They observe their assigned areas and as one example, advise the neighbor who might be leaving a tool shed open when they are away. That could lead to items being stolen. Other unsafe conditions would also be brought to a neighbor’s attention. They also provide information and encourage support and participation in the program. If a stranger enters the park a Watch member would approach in a friendly manner and offer assistance (but other residents could also do this). If the person refuses to cooperate, their description would be noted and 911 called. Note if a resident or a watch member sees a ‘prowler’ during dark hours, for the sake of safety, they should not be approached. A call to 911 is the proper thing to do.
