Abandoned Mine Land Program • Title IV of SMCRA • Financed by a fee on coal production – $.35 per ton on surface coal – $.15 per ton on underground coal – $.10 per ton on lignite The fee expires on September 30, 2007

Accomplishments • The AML program has provided more than $3 billion in grants to the States and Tribes to clean up mine sites abandoned before the enactment of the Surface Mining Act. • In fact, more than 248,000 acres of abandoned coal mine sites have been reclaimed by the States and Tribes through the AML program. • In addition, hazards associated with more than 20,000 open mine portals and shafts, 2.5 million feet of dangerous highwalls, and 100,000 acres of dangerous piles and embankments have been eliminated and the land has been reclaimed.
