1. OBJECT The scope of this document is the description of the methodology and safety instructions, for megger and continuity testing electrical cables. 2. SAFETY AT WORK Before starting the megger and continuity tests that are the subject of this procedure, a series of safety specifications must be taken into account in order to protect all workers from potential risk inside client facilities. 

Always keep the safety distances.

Connect all equipment to ground using suitable conductors.

Signalling the work area

Use the appropriate personal protection elements: helmet, boots, security gloves, anti-static and fireproof clothes.

Ensure the potential is in off condition.

3. DOCUMENTS AND STANDARDS 

Megger manual

IEEE 43:2000

4. TEST INSTUMENTS 

Torque wrench – 0-100 NM

Insulation resistance tester – 0-5KV megger

Insulation resistance tester – 0-5KV megger for phase checking

Digital multi meter – Fluke

DC high Voltage test Kit

Necessary additional tools & tackles as per the requirement.

5. PERSONAL The engineers and technicians destined to the realization of these tests must have the suitable formation in works next to installations of test kit, having received training in Health and Safety in the work. They must know the manuals and instructions for the use of the equipment, as well as this specific procedure.

6. TESTING 6.1 

PRE – TEST PREPARATION MEGGER TESTING:The leads used for connecting megger testing with the circuit should be fault free and the two connecting leads should have electrical continuity. It is checked by touching the free ends of the leads together while the megger button is pressed ON to check for zero resistance.

Check for PVC adopters are provided for cables and male adapter for all PVC conduits terminating in the panel board.

Check the dressing is complete for all the wires in the panel boards

Confirm all the connections are completed before the testing.

6.2

ELECTRICAL CONTINUITY TEST MEGGER TESTING;-

Connect the free megger test probes to any two conductors required to be tested.

With all the appliance connected or the two ends of the conductors shorted and all Switches switched ON the reading shown on the megger should be zero. If the reading shows infinity then there is an open circuit. The fault should be traced and rectified.

For cables, the extreme ends of any two phase is shorted and when the test is conducted the reading should be zero if the meter reads infinity or some value of mega ohms then there is a fault in the cable and it should be rectified. Same procedure shall be repeated for other 3 conductors of the cable.

6.3

INSULATION RESISTANCE TEST;6.3.1

CABLE;

For wires the circuit is tested, Megger range should be 0 - 5KV I. R - (Y B + Earth) II. Y – (R B + Earth) III. B – (Y B + Earth) IV. Between Phases With the other ends of the circuit conductor open the value should be infinity for all the test. If the value is zero there is short circuit or the insulation of the wire is damaged.

6.3.2

DC HIGH VOLTAGE TEST:

Before the test both ends of the cable shall be ensured .

Connect the control cable between test leads to one phase and remaining two phases connected to earthing cable, connect the Earthing cable between earthing grid to control unit and HV unit.

Now select the range as per the requirement, gradually increase the steps in such a way that charging current stabilises in each step till you reach the value. (11 KV /root 3 x 4 – 25.4 KV ) ( standard: Record the steps as shown in the test report and discharge the applied voltage on the cable to earth.

6.4

Carry out the insulation resistance test after HV test & record the value.
