SERVING IT UP FRESH… 3 TIMES A WEEK! MONDAY EDITION — SEPTEMBER 14, 2009 #1920

Our beat is local... our bend, up! The classifieds are free! Box 313, Merritt BC V1K 1B8 T(250)378-5717 F(250)378-4700 [email protected] http://merrittmorningmarket.wordpress.com

It’s a long way to Tipperary…

John and Ingrid Boys of Nicola LogWorks have just returned from a working holiday setting up their first log home sold to Ireland. Nicola LogWorks exports log and timber structures to destinations as “exotic” as Kalamazoo to Copenhagen, but this scribed log home to Tipperary is a first for the local company, and one of the few BC-handcrafted log homes in Ireland. Their customer – an organic beef farmer — chose to build with logs for their positive environmental impact and longevity. Needless to say, in a country where homes are built of concrete, the erection of the log structure caused quite a stir, drawing visitors and helping hands from all of the neighbouring farms as well as surrounding towns.

Cents win hometown opener There was a general sense

of renewed optimism in the crowd at the NV Memorial Arena Friday evening, for the Merritt Centennials’ first home game of the regular season. And in the same spirit, the Cents doubled the score against the Trail Smoke Eaters for a 4-2 win. Ryne Bodger scored 2 of the goals, and Jordan Soquila & Dustin Johnson matched Bodger’s pair. A great start to the Cents’ next phase! The next regular season game is against the Prince George Spruce Kings, Friday, Sept. 18, 7:30pm, at the NV Memorial Arena.

Japan's 40,000+ centenarians This month, Japan will have 40,399

people aged 100 or older, surpassing the previous record of 36,276 last year. More than 86% are women. The centenarian population surpassed 10,000 just 10 years ago; reached 30,000 in 2007 and grew another 10,000 in the past 2 years. By 2050, it is expected to reach nearly 1 million. People are living longer mainly because of progress in medical care and the high living standard since the end of World War II. A 114-year-old woman from Okinawa is Japan's oldest citizen; the oldest man is 112 years old. Associated Press

The best pictures are up at the Courthouse Art Gallery. Colourful & candid, dramatic & serene — it’s all there. Gallery hours are: Thurs. 6-8pm; Fri. & Sat. 10am-4pm. Volunteers are always welcome. If you’d like to get involved in gallery activities, please contact Kathi, 378-6515. Defensive Driving Course One of my co-workers got a speeding ticket and was attending a defensive-driving course to have points erased from his license. The instructor, a police officer, emphasized that being on time was crucial and that the classroom doors would be locked when each session began. Just after one class started, someone knocked on the locked door. The officer opened it and asked, "Why are you late?" The student replied, "I was trying not to get another ticket." The officer let him in. Bible Story James (age 4) was listening to a Bible story. His dad read, "The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city but his wife looked back and was turned to salt." Concerned, James asked, "What happened to the flea?"
