Course Description: This class will focus on all phases of digital video editing as it applies to the postproduction phase of the video project. Editing is an art, a technique, and an instinct and we will practice the varying styles that make up this craft. Final Cut Pro 6 is the software that we will use as our tool. Students will gain ‘hands on’ knowledge of the editing interface, but more importantly develop editing techniques in aesthetics, story movement, and theory.

Instructional Approach: This is a studio course with an emphasized approach to ‘learn by doing’. Class will be divided among lecture, screenings, demonstration and discussion. Segments of class time will be allocated to production and editing workshops. Demonstrations and discussion may be inserted during edit workshop times at any point during the class. Critiques will occur during Rough Cut and Final Cut stages.

Outcomes/ Objectives: This course will give the students the opportunity to do the following: - Develop skills in all phases of Non linear editing (using Final Cut Pro) - Interface and Post workflow techniques - Editing for Continuity - Editing for Montage - Audio Editing - Editing Dialogue - Color Correction, Chroma Key, Key framing - Output distribution: Web, DVD, File formats - Begin to develop and use personal and universal vocabulary for critical discussion - Explore & develop personal expression through video production storytelling

My Expectations: When Assignments are distributed you will need to get started early. This class is all about the ‘effort’, staying prepared, and meeting deadlines. Enjoy the process! There will be moments of ‘Technical Difficulties’ and I will be happy to help you outside of class time. Feel free to contact me anytime between the hours of 9am to 8pm. Treat your fellow classmates with respect and professionalism. You will be working together in a variety of projects. As a class, we will review Rough Cuts and I expect active participation in this phase.

Grade Breakdown: Continuity Narrative Assignment – 25% Montage Assignment – 25% Montage Rough Cut – 4% Montage Treatment – 1% Quizzes – 15% Edit Workshop Homework - 15% Attendance – 10% Participation – 5% A = 90-100% B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69% F = 0-59% Note: Audits must be determined by Week 3.

Assignments/ Homework Description: Continuity Assignment 25%: Students will work in groups to develop a short narrative scene. Students will prep preproduction materials, scout locations, and develop a story. Students will execute proper shooting rules during production and then edit the project within the framework of continuity editing. The shooting for this project will occur during class time. Montage Assignment 30%: Students will shoot and edit a project showcasing one of the many attributes of the Montage aesthetic. Idea associative, Metric, and Sequential analytical montage principles will be explored. Video shooting is recommended. Use of Stock footage is optional. Preproduction materials and a Rough Cut are mandatory. Edit Workshop Homework 15%: Students will have a series of short homework assignments to develop and practice skills reviewed in class. Students will be provided footage and develop skills in pacing, match action, dialogue editing, transitions, lower thirds, color correction, key framing, compositing, chroma key, filters, and timing cuts to music.

Textbook Readings/ Quizzes: Complete the Textbook Readings by the date determined on the Class Schedule. Quizzes will be from the Textbook readings as well as class demonstration.

Attendance: Class attendance is extremely important! Please attend regularly and contact me (via Email or phone) if you will be absent. Students are expected to arrive a few minutes early to class. Please respect the learning atmosphere if you arrive late. 1 Absence will automatically deduct 4 points from your grade. Additional absence will deduct 5 points from your grade per absence. Excused absences will also deduct points determined by the situation.

Participation: Project reviews will be shown during class time. Critiques and feedback involving other projects factor into your grading. I expect you to be actively and vocally involved in this class. (For any additional feedback from myself please email me for a request)

Required Hours - Prerequisites: Class will be a combination of lecture and practice. Students will be expected to finish assignments during open lab times. Check with the Media Assistant about available lab times. Students must be comfortable with the Mac interface or basic editing software to register for this class. Students who have taken MM130 or comparable basic editing training are eligible.

Media Management: - Students will set up a class folder on their computer station in the Lab, on the Student Hard Drive. (Example Fauske_MM235). Stick to 1 station! - An external Fire Wire or USB drive formatted for a Mac is highly recommended. (Note: If you are utilizing an External Drive ALWAYS set your “Scratch Disks” to point to your External Drive every time you open up your ‘Final Cut Pro’ project file) - DO NOT USE THE ‘MEDIA DRIVE’ TO EDIT OR CAPTURE FOOTAGE. The Media Drive is not designed for editing. If your project needs to be mobile you must speak with myself, Greg Walters, or a Lab assistant to review the proper steps. We will utilize the Media Drive for turning in projects. - For Homework assignments you will import footage located on your Class Computer. Student Hard Drive > Shared > MM235 Media - If moving files from machine to machine always move the ‘Project File’ and corresponding Video files together! These two items always need to be together. - Please provide 1 Mini DV Tape for class projects and archiving (Panasonic - 60 minute).

MyPcc: All students are required to set up their MyPcc account and email. Students can log into the MM235 Course page under “My Courses” to access links and forms. I will use your PCC email account to post grades and announcements.

Flexibility Statement: Assignments will be due and Exams will be given as scheduled unless particular circumstances arise that necessitate change. These may include inclement weather, and certain institutional problems. You will be notified of a revised schedule.
