or primera vez, la Imprensa Oficial del Estado de São Paulo (Imprensa Oficial do Estado de São Paulo) y las tres editoriales universitarias del Estado de São Paulo, reunieron fuerzas para participar de las grandes ferias internacionales de libros por medio de un único catálogo. Aquí están reunidos cuarenta títulos que se destacan en el conjunto de sus publicaciones. Ya sean los títulos relativos a temas brasileños o no, fueron elegidos teniendo siempre en mente al lector de otros países y el interés amplio que necesitaban despertar. Algunas obras se refieren a grandes figuras de la cultura brasileña de ayer y de hoy, como el novelista Machado de Assis, el arquitecto Oscar Niemeyer o el cineasta Fernando Meirelles; otras, a temas importantes de la historia brasileña y latinoamericana, como el inicio de la colonización en el continente, la abolición de la esclavitud, la dictadura militar, la cultura afroamericana y las poblaciones autóctonas. Hay libros de arte contemporáneo, o de maravillas de la artesanía indígena y popular. Pero hay también libros sobre temas de historia general, y también sobre economía internacional. Todos ellos componen un conjunto bastante diversificado de títulos disponibles para traducción en otros países. También participan de este esfuerzo de ampliación del circuito de lo que hay de mejor en la producción intelectual brasileña, la Cámara Brasileña del Libro (cbl) y la Agencia Brasileña de Promoción de Exportaciones e Inversiones (apex).

A Brazilian catalogue

F

or the first time, the São Paulo State Official Press (Imprensa Oficial do Es­tado de São Paulo) and three university publishers from the state of São Paulo have come together, in one catalogue, to take part in the foremost international book fairs. Here you will find forty prime titles from their bevy of publications. Whether they are Brazilian themes or not, they were chosen keeping in mind not only readers from other countries, but also the wide interest they are required to generate. Some works concern significant people of Brazilian culture from yesteryear and today, such as the novelist Machado de Assis, the architect Oscar Niemeyer or the movie director Fernando Meirelles; others are on matters that are important to Brazilian and Latin-American history, like the beginning of the colonization of the continent, the abolition of slavery, the military dictatorship, the African-American culture and the autochthonic populations. There are books on contemporary art, or the wonders of indigenous and popular arts and crafts. Besides this, there are also books on general history, and on international economy. All these make up a wide and diversified selection of titles available for translations in other countries. Also included in this effort to expand the circuit of the best of what Brazilian intellectual production has to offer is the Brazilian Chamber of Books (cbl) and the Brazilian Export Promotion Agency (apex).

esde que fue creada en 1891, la Imprensa Oficial del Estado de São Paulo tiene como objetivo darle transparencia y preservar los actos de la admi­ nistración pública. Llevada al extremo, su misión consiste en preservar la propia historia del estado de São Paulo y, por lo tanto, de Brasil. Tal objetivo se realiza también por medio de los libros que imprime y edita. La edición de libros, por otra parte, no es una actividad reciente de la empresa. Desde la década del 70 la editorial Imprensa Oficial produce, por ejemplo, ediciones facsímil de documentos y libros para el Gobierno del estado. Desde entonces su producción editorial vino creciendo y durante la década del 90, ganaron fuerza las asociaciones con las principales editoriales universitarias del país, además de otras instituciones culturales sin fines de lucro. Más recientemente, en 2003, la edición y publicación de libros dejó de ser una actividad paralela para ganar un núcleo propio dentro de la Imprensa Oficial. A partir de ese momento, se fortaleció la posibilidad de elaborar una línea editorial propia que se sumase a la coedición de libros. Los resultados obtenidos en 2007 justifican el esfuerzo. El libro Resmungos, de Ferreira Gullar, ilustrado por Henrique Amaral, conquistó el más importante premio en Brasil, el Premio de Libro del Año de la Cámara Brasileña del Libro. Los criterios de la Imprensa Oficial en la selección de libros a publicar atienden por determinación de su estatuto a su relevancia histórica, cultural y social. Sin embargo, no se restringe al ámbito de las publicaciones oficiales, y no se deja paralizar por imperativos comerciales. El reconocimiento al que aspira, editando obras de interés público, es dar su contribución a los debates culturales en curso en la sociedad brasileña. Siempre en busca de la excelencia, la editorial Imprensa Oficial viene obteniendo el reconocimiento de ese esfuerzo, conquistando muchos premios importantes de las áreas gráfica y editorial. De esta manera, dejó su marca en la galería de editoriales que más se destacan y con el acervo más variado del país.

ince its creation in 1891, the São Paulo State Official Press (Imprensa Oficial do Estado de São Paulo) has had the goal of providing transparency and preserving records of the public administration. Taken to the extreme, its mission consists of preserving the history of the state of São Paulo and, therefore, of Brazil. Such an objective is also made possible through the books it prints and publishes. Publishing books is not a recent activity for the company. Since the 1970’s, the Official Press has produced, for example, facsimile publications of documents and books for the state government. From that time on, its book publishing has grown, and, during the 1990’s, emphasis was placed on three partnerships with the main university publishing houses in Brazil, besides other non-profit cultural institutions. More recently, in 2003, the editing and publishing of books was no longer a parallel activity, now with its own department within the Official Press. Since then, the possibility of launching its own editorial line has strengthened, which added internally-produced books to the existing co-publishing activity. The results obtained in 2007 justified the effort. The book Having a Whinge, by Ferreira Gullar, illustrated by Antonio Henrique Amaral, was bestowed with the most important award in Brazil, the Book of the Year Award given by the Brazilian Chamber of Books. The criteria of Official Press when selecting books to be published are, as stated in our statute, in accordance with their historical, cultural and social relevance. Without being restricted to the area of official publications, the company is not inhibited by commercial restrictions. Recognition that is sought is related to editing works of public interest and contributing to cultural debates in Brazilian society. Constantly seeking excellence, the São Paulo State Official Press has gained some recognition for its efforts, winning several important awards in the printing and publishing fields. It has thus taken its well-defined mark into the publishing house Hall of Fame with the most varied catalogue in Brazil.
