PREPARATION / ORGANISATION Photocopy worksheet for each student Create ice-cream pricelist (either 1 copy to project onto whiteboard or one copy between two) Print out coin cut-out sheet

1/. Seat students on the carpet 2/. Discuss that today we will be undertaking a money challenge. 3/. Put the worksheet on the smartboard (or OHP).

4/. The aim of today’s lesson if for the students to work out the cost of each item in the customers order, add the costs up, then show which coins could be used to buy this ice cream combination. 5/. EXAMPLE: Go through question 1.

f). The final step is to decide what coins to use to purchase this ice cream. Cut them out and stick them onto the worksheet. 6/. As a class go through question 2. This time ask the students what do I do next? How much does that cost? Etc. So they are answering the question for you. 7/. Send students back to their desks to complete the rest of the questions. However keep the struggling maths group on the carpet with you to work through the questions together. 8/. At the end of the lesson ask the students to place their names on the top of the worksheet and place them on the teachers desk.

Cleaning

9/. Students must pick up all rubbish and place it in the bin. Leftover paper coins must also be placed on the desk for the next lesson.
