General Information

1.1 Assignment Information There is only one assignment for this module, weighting 50% of the total mark of the module. This is an individual assignment. You must answer all the questions. The marks assigned o each questions are clearly indicated in front of that question. In your answers, make sure that you explicitly write down all the steps you followed to find the results; results alone, with no clear indication of the methodology used will get zero marks! Due to the difficulty of typing formulas and other mathematical notation in Microsoft Word, this assignment is mainly (but not completely, see below) paper-based. Specifically, you need to hand-in two things:

1.2

Your answers to all the questions, in paper. For all the questions, please write yours answers inside the boxes provided, and attach extra pieces of paper if necessary. Additionally, for Question 3 attach, in separate piece of paper, the printout of the plot you created.

The Excel file of Question 3, on CD. Question 3 requires that you use Microsoft Excel to generate some plots. This Excel file should include the initial data and the two graphs. Please burn this file on a CD and hand it in.

Plagiarism

The university defines an assessment offence as any action(s) or behaviour likely to confer an unfair advantage in assessment, whether by advantaging the alleged offender or disadvantaging (deliberately or unconsciously) another or others. A number of examples are set out in the Regulations and these include: Section 1.1(e): The submission of material (written, visual or oral), originally produced by another person or persons or oneself, without due acknowledgement*, so that the work could be assumed to be the student's own. For the purposes of these Regulations, this includes incorporation of significant extracts or elements taken from the work of (an)other(s) or oneself, without acknowledgement or reference*, and the submission of work produced in collaboration for an assignment based on the assessment of individual work. (Such offences are typically described as plagiarism and collusion.) The University’s Assessment Offences Regulations can be found on UEL website at http://www.uel.ac.uk/qa/manual/documents/part8-assessment-offences.doc

Turnitin

This module does not required you to submit this coursework to Turnitin within UELPlus. However, all work must be submitted to the CITE Helpdesk counter. Any work not submitted by the deadline date will received an automatic mark of 0% unless extenuating circumstances have been sought and granted.

SD0002 – Mathematics (Assignment 1) 2009/10 Question 2 [35%] a) On the same piece of graph paper, plot the graphs of the functions:

y  4x  10 and

[15 marks]

y  2x  6

Briefly explain, for each of these functions, how you identified their graphs. b) From the graphs you plotted in the previous sub-question, locate the point where the two lines intersect. [5 marks] c) Prove that the point you identified in the previous sub-question is correct, by using the theory of linear equations. [15 marks]

SD0002 – Mathematics (Assignment 1) 2009/10 Question 3 [35 marks] Consider the following collection of data

X 3 2 4 4

Y 6 7 9 8

a) Using Microsoft Excel, create a scatter plot of the data. Your x-axis should be labelled “X”, your y-axis as “Y”, and the title of the graph should be “Scatter Plot”. [20 marks] b) Add a linear regression line to your plot, and display the equation of that line. [10 marks] In both of the above sub-questions, provide a brief explanation of the steps you followed to generate the graphs, as well as screenshots of your graphs (one screen shot for each subquestion) [5 marks]
