Martti Ahtisaari was born on June 23, 1937 in Viipuri, Finland (Vyborg, Russia).
His family moved to Kuopio in during the Continuation War.
In 1960, he moved to Karachi, Pakistan to lead YMCA’s physical education training establishment.
Joined Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland in 1965.
Married Eeva Irmeli Hyvarinen in 1968.
In 1989, Ahtisaari was sent to Namibia to lead 8,000 UN peacekeepers for the independence of Namibia.
He became the 10th president of Finland in 1994.
Successfully led peace negotiations between the Free Aceh Movement and the Indonesian government in 2005.
Ahtisaari was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on October 10, 2008.
CHARACTER TRAITS Ahtisaari was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to stop many violence and conflicts. Also he did this for over thirty years. He had gone to many countries to help stop some conflicts. Sometimes the countries wanted independence and some has violence in the country.
CONFLICT Martti Ahtisaari went through many conflicts at many places, like Namibia, Indonesia, Kosovo and Iraq. In Namibia, he led 8,000 peacekeepers who wanted the independence of their country. He tried to stop the argument between the Free Aceh Movement and the Indonesian government.
RESOLUTION Ahtisaari worked in Namibia for the independence of the country. Also in Indonesia, Ahtisaari successfully led peace negotiations between the Free Aceh Movement and the Indonesian government. Kosovo declared that its independence in 2008, which Ahtisaari also helped. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts and work for over thirty years.
