India Employment Outlook The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey for the fourth quarter 2009 was conducted by interviewing a representative sample of 5,637 employers in India. A robust labor market is forecast by Indian employers for Quarter 4 2009. With 36% of employers anticipating an increase in headcount, 2% expecting a decrease and 56% predicting no change, the resulting Net Employment Outlook is a bright +34%. Throughout this report, we use the term “Net Employment Outlook.” This figure is derived by taking the percentage of employers anticipating total employment to increase, and subtracting from this the percentage expecting to see a decrease in employment at their location in the next quarter. The result of this calculation is the Net Employment Outlook. Quarter-over-quarter, the Outlook has improved by a considerable 11 percentage points. However, compared to Quarter 4 2008, hiring intentions are considerably weaker, with the Outlook declining by 14 percentage points. Once seasonal adjustments are added to the data, the Outlook is a strong +25%. This reflects a moderate 6 percentage point improvement quarter-over-quarter. Year-over-year, however, the Outlook is 14 percentage points weaker. From this point forward, all data discussed in the commentary is seasonally adjusted, unless stated otherwise.
