MANAGING PEOPLE OBJECTIVES: • Define Management. • Explain the four (4) main functions of Managers. • Recognize the Management levels in the organizational hierarchy. • Explain how the world of work has evolved. • Explain the impact of Globalization on the modern organization.

MANAGING PEOPLE • Management is defined as the attainment of organizational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, organizing, leading and controlling organizational resources.

MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS • PLANNING- select goals and ways to achieve them. • ORGANIZING-assign responsibility for task accomplishment. • LEADING-use influence to motivate employees. • CONTROLLING- monitor activities and make corrections.

MANAGEMENT LEVELS IN THE ORGANIZATIONAL HIERARCHY

• Top Management are responsible for charting the course of an Organization. • They are responsible for determining the mission statement and defining strategies to achieve them. • Top Management will include the CEO,PRESIDENT, CORPORATE HEAD, AND CHAIRPERSON.

MANAGEMENT LEVELS IN THE ORGANIZATIONAL HIERARCHY

• MIDDLE MANAGERS-They are often responsible for business units and major departments. Examples include IT Managers, Division Heads. • Typically they are concerned with the near future and usually have Line Managers below them such as Supervisors and Foremen.

MANAGEMENT LEVELS IN THE ORGANIZATIONAL HIERARCHY • At the Operational Level of the Organization, focus is on the execution of routine, daily tasks. This level will include clerical workers, customer service representatives, data entry clerks.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE WORKPLACE FACTORS INCLUDE: • The advent of the Information Age has made even the most remote parts of the world accessible. • An increased number of Free Trade Agreements among countries has made the movement of goods and services easier. The world can now be regarded as a global village. This is commonly referred to as GLOBALIZATION.

EVOLUTION OF THE WORKPLACE • Customers have become more educated and are more discriminating. Today it is not only about selling but also about maintaining a relationship with customers.

EVOLUTION OF THE WORKPLACE • Privatization of State Companies. This has resulted in the growing trend towards contract labour. • Outsourcing of key business units. For example Human Resources.

MANAGEMENT IN THE NEW WORKPLACE • In the new workplace, where there is the need to respond to changing markets, employees need to be empowered. Employees are expected to seize opportunities and solve problems as they emerge. They therefore have to be multi-skilled.

MANAGEMENT IN THE NEW WORKPLACE • The need for Organizations to become less hierarchical to respond to the volatile environment has caused the typical pyramid structure to flatten to allow information to flow quickly from top to bottom and decisions to be made with greater speed.

THE NEW EMPLOYEE • I.T. has improved how we communicate with customers, fellow employees, and business partners. I.T. has also revolutionized how work is performed. Employees can perform their jobs from home or another remote location.

THE NEW EMPLOYEE • Flexible hours, telecommuting, virtual teams are increasingly popular ways of performing jobs.
