Write the number 100.000 and the word Hundred Thousand on the white board. • Assess pupils undestanding by getting them to fill up place value of given numbers. • Use the same numbers for pupils to tell the place values of the digits in the numbers. • Write a 5 digit number and write down the values of each digit (example : in the digit 61.352, the digit 6 is in the ten thousands place. Activity : • Pupils listening explanation teacher to compare the numbers by looking at the place value of each digit. The first looking at the greatest value (ten thousand). If the digits in the ten thousands place are the same, then compare the digits in the thousands. If the digits in the thousands place are the sama, then compare the digits in the hundreds. If the digits in the hundreds place are the sama, then compare the digits in the tens. Opening : • Basmallah • Encourage pupils to devide a number by a 1 digit number without uding the formal algorithm. Activity : • Show pupils how to devide a 4 digit number by a 1 digit number using formal algorithm. Begin by deviding the thousands by the 1 digit number, then the hundreds, tens and finally the ones. For example :

Then show pupils a division sum involving zero in the quotient. Show pupils an example of a division sum where the thousands are not enough to be devided. For example :

Get pupils to devide numbers up to 4 digits by 10. Tell pupils to think of multiplication when they devide. For example : 70 : 10 = 7 (Think of 7 x 10 = 70). Show pupils another way to devide, by the cancelling method. Here the zeros in the ones place of the number and the divisor are cancelled. For Example :
