Logical Positivism and Personal Consciousness By Anthony J. Fejfar, B.A., J.D., Esq., Coif © Copyright 2009 by Anthony J. Fejfar While I have argued that as a matter of science, one should use Logical Phenomenology rather than Logical Positivism as the basis for scientific method, as a matter of Personal Consciousness, Logical Positivism makes sense at Level 1 of Consciousness. Now, I have argued for Personal Consciousness based upon the Cognitional Structure which can be expanded beyond Level 3 as follows: 6. Intuition 5. Hermeneutic Creativity 4. Formal Operations 3. Judgment and Reflection 2. Understanding 1. Experience Now, once you have developed all of the above levels of Consciousness, personally, you can then “download” Formal Operations (Logic) to Level 1, Ordinary Consciounsess, and thus produce Logical Positivism, which I define as “Rigorous logical inferences from Sense Experience.”
Logical Positivism at Level 1 keeps a person
grounded in the real world and prevents magical thinking which is appropriate to Level 5 Hermeneutic Creativity, which is the Magic Level of Consciousness.
Level 6 Intuition
allows us to have Sense Experience at Level 1, rather than just knowing the World Mediated by Meaning (Lonergan) at Level 2. Logical Positivism is only appropriate at
Level 1, and is not appropriate at the Higher Levels of Personal Consciousness. Recall, that a person who is Moderately Dissacociative, can shift Levels of Personal Consciousness, when appropriate. You can teach Logic at Level 1 using Concrete Operations to start with.
