The New Testers Guide To Entering Keys Manually. by: nutsky73 (1-01-07) *A guide specifically for CoolSat models, however much of the information contained in this manual can be used on other branded STB’s. From time to time changes in the way the networks send out key data will cause the auto roll feature of the most current bin file not to work. When this happens we must enter the current keys manually in order to continue testing. As testers we are alerted to a possible key change when we have our usual signal quality strength, however we get the black screen with the “scrambled channel” message.

With your remote press: 8282 An alternative is to press: Mute then Exit This screen will automatically pop up:

Notice the format below and compare it with the picture above: For Dish CAS Ident

( Nagravision ) (Dish Network 0001)

With the remote the current keys will be entered where the 00’s are.

For Bev, cursor over (volume key right on remote) to the 2 Nagravision slot.

Getting keys: There are many ways to get the current keys. One of the simplest ways is to use a “key grabbing” program. There are several out there. Here is a small list (there are more): KeyUpdate, Keyripper, Jeepers, Keymaster, SN2Keys, DTKeygrabber There are also several websites out there that keep updated keys displayed. My advice is to find and use several sources. One of these sources is always first to get the current keys. Usually it isn’t the same one every time. We can always use a back up. You can also cross check a couple of sources to be more sure you get the current keys. To save time and space I will make an example of my favorite program. Keyripper:

Once you have the current keys it is time to enter them. Curser down (channel key down on the remote) until you reach the first line you wish to edit. The line you are currently on will be highlighted yellow. Notice the bottom of the screen shows that letter characters are entered A – F by pressing the “Info” key on the remote. After entering letter characters you must press the right “volume key” to move the curser over to input the next character. This is not done when entering numerical digits. Use the channel numbers on the remote to enter numerical digits. Continue to curser down for each key line you wish to edit. Be sure to use the exact format shown on pages 2 and 3. Any discrepancy in the current key or in the format they are entered will result in the scrambled channel screen. Take your time, be thorough and you will have a good result.

After you have entered the current keys (It is ok to check twice) hit “Exit”. You will be asked, “Settings were changed. Do you wish to save?” Curser over to “Yes” and hit “Ok” on the remote. This will take you back to the last channel you were on before you entered 8282. Your current key entry is complete. Congratulations! *Note: You may need to switch between channels before you get unscrambled audio/video. If this doesn’t work try turning the receiver off and then back on again. If you still have issues first suspect and recheck the keys you just entered. If everything checks out correctly then it is time for some research into a possible ECM. You will need to visit your favorite Testing web site. There you will find out if the issue is indeed an ECM and also what you can do about it. This type of issue will most likely require a new bin file to be loaded onto your receiver. Good luck and happy testing.
