Linking in Technical Objects • Links are characterized by four basic criteria 1.
Direct vs. Indirect
2.
Rigid vs. Flexible
3.
Removable vs. Non-removable
4.
Complete vs. Partial

1: Direct vs. Indirect • Direct: Two object held without a linking component

1: Direct vs. Indirect • Indirect: a linking component is needed to hold two objects (glue, nails, screws, etc.)
Copy Me
2: Rigid vs. Flexible • Rigid: the linking component or its surface is rigid • Flexible: the linking component or its surface can be deformed and return to its original position (springs, rubber, etc.)

3: Removable vs. Non-removable • Removable: the linked parts can be separated without damage

3: Removable vs. Non-removable • Non-removable: Separating the parts causes damage to either the parts or their surfaces

4: Complete vs. Partial • Complete: the linked parts cannot move independent of one another
• Partial: one of the two linked parts can move independently of the other , and this is part of its normal function
Copy Me
Guiding • Guiding: function of controlling the motion of one or more moving parts

Guiding • Three categories of guiding 1. Translational 2. Rotational 3. Helical
Copy Me
Translational Guiding • Translational motion = straight line (left to right/ up to down) • Ex: Sliding doors, film cutter

Rotational Guiding • Rotational motion = circular • Ex: Tire axil, Door knob
Copy Me
Helical Guiding • Helical = combination of translational and rotational. In a straight line while the moving part is rotating on its on axis • Ex: Thread attached to C-Clamp frame, wine corkscrew
