Life’s Hierarchy – Molecules, Compounds and Mixtures For the test, you may put definitions into your own words but I will be looking for the key ideas in the underlined words and phrases. These words and phrases alone do not necessarily make a complete definition. You may use the pictures and examples given here or include others of your own choice. Pictures will not be graded for artistry but for relevance.

Terms (4pts) molecule: a group of two or more atoms linked together in a chemical bond; a group of like or different atoms held together by chemical forces. Everything around us is made of groups of atoms bonded together into packages called molecules. Each molecule is so small that you would not be able to see one molecule of a substance. But when thousands of molecules are together, they might look like a glass of water, a tree in the forest, or your computer screen, depending on what types of molecules they are. A glass of water sitting on a table might look pretty still, but the molecules of water (H2O) and glass (Si) are moving all the time. (2 pts) Fact: Though too small to see, all molecules are always moving and they will move faster as temperature increases. (2pts choose two molecules) Examples of molecules include: two oxygen atoms bonded together form the molecule O2, two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom H2O which is which is the compound water, DNA which is also a compound, Hydrogen H2. Four types of organic molecules that are associated with life are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Organic molecules provide the body with structural materials to form cells, tissues, and organs.

(3pts) Picture Hydrogen Molecules are not compounds because they contain only one kind of atom.

(4pts) compound: a substance made up of the atoms of two or more elements joined by chemical bonds into a molecule. The elements are combined in a definite ratio. (2pts) 2 Examples of compounds: DNA is a compound. Water is a compound having two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. (2pts) Picture of a compound: DNA is an example of a large molecule which is also a compound.

Some molecules are made of only one type of atom. For instance; two oxygen atoms bond together to form the molecule O2, the part of the air that we need to breath to survive. (O2 is a molecule but it is not a compound because it has only one type of atom)

(4pts) Fact: All compounds are molecules but not all molecules are compounds. (4pts) mixture: a composition of two or more substances that are held together by physical forces, but are not chemically combined with each other and are capable of being separated. (2pts) 2 Examples of mixtures: salt water, salad dressing, fruit salad, and soil (7 Point BONUS!) History: In 1661 Robert Boyle hypothesized, in his famous treatise The Sceptical Chymist, that matter is composed of clusters of particles and that chemical change results from the rearrangement of the clusters.
