9:30 – 10:10 / 1:30 – 2:10 CONCEPT TEACHING 1 (Split Group, 20 minutes each) Phonics: Letter P (Gross Motor Skills) INTRO, 3 minutes: Teacher holds Pointy Patches Puppet while song is played. Teacher points to the patches on his clothes when the song says P for patches. Look at his clothes! Pointy Patches has a lot of patches on his clothes! There are green ones, blue ones, red ones – all mixed up together! I have more patches here. Why don’t we put more patches on Mr. Pointy Patches? Give kids scrap cloth to tape on the puppet while song is playing.
TEACH, 7 minutes:
Pointy Patches’ name starts with the letter P. Let’s go to the house of the letter P. (Knock, knock, knock) This is the mommy P (touch it) and the baby P (touch it). Point and say the pwords on the board. Call each child to have a turn to review at least one P - picture from the board.
ACTIVITY, 10 minutes: Glue patches on a letter P poster cut-out. Or bring a pumpkin and make pumpkin soup (premade in advance) or glue pumpkin seed on the letter P.
Math: Color Red and Circle INTRO, 5 minutes: Introduce Red by way of a guessing game. Teacher holds a box of colored balls and then mysteriously sorts them. Throw away and show distaste to all the other colors. Blue ball? Nah, I don’t like that! (Toss it out) Yellow ball, yucky! Orange ball, blech. Out you go!
If it’s a red ball, keep it with you and show your fondness for it. Wow, red ball! I want this! (And put it back in the box) Have many balls to sort so kids can figure out your pattern. Do not say anything, just act it out.
After all balls have been sorted, the other teacher can ask the kids why you threw all the other balls away and why you kept some of them. They should be able to deduce that you like red balls only!
TEACH, 5 minutes: Brainstorm with some kids some other red items. Write the word red and draw the pictures that they say on the board. Example: strawberry, fire truck, heart, etc. Teach them to spell red. Spell RED in the tune of Jingle Bells. R-E-D, R-E-D, R-E-D spells RED Oh what fun it is to spell R-E-D for red!
ACTIVITY, 10 minutes: Instruct Table Activity: Give kids 3 small red circle cut outs (cookie size), each with the letter R, E, D. Kids need to glue it on a small piece of paper in order of how the word is spelled. After
giving instructions and BEFORE the kids go to the table, have them pick a red ball from the box and loudly spell the word. After which, they can head to the table. Doing it this way allows them to trickle to the table, instead of going as a large group. The 2 ndteacher can meet them at the table while the other teacher supervises the ball picking and spelling. SPELLING RED. Kids will need to glue 3 red circle cut-outs in order to spell the word red. To be glued on small white paper (half a bond).
