Reflection from prior lesson: Students used a new material (rubber glass) to design solutions to solve a real life problem. New materials are constantly being invented and made into products that could be available in the future. Lesson Goals/Standards: I can plan and carry out an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of matter. I can construct a model by assembling small pieces in order to build an object. I can design a solution to building a tall tower and a strong tower out of paper. I can analyze the cause and effect relationship between a material’s properties and its uses. Lesson Objectives: 2-PS1-1 Plan and carry out an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties. (SEP: 3; DCI: PS1.A ; CCC: Patterns) 2-PS1-3 Construct an evidence-based account of how an object made of a small set of pieces can be disassembled and made into a new object. (SEP: 6 ; DCI: PS1.A; CCC: Energy/Matter) K-2-ETS1-2 Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem. K-2-ETS1-3 Analyze data from tests of two objects designed to solve the same problem to compare the strengths and weaknesses of how each performs.

A. The Lesson - Mystery Science Material Magic (Could you build a house out of paper?) 1. Introduction (5-7 minutes) ○ Getting attention: Flat tire...shhhhh. ○ Relating to past experience and/or knowledge: We’ve been talking about different properties of matter and how they can change states. ■ Q: Who can raise their hand quietly and tell me what the 3 states of matter are? A: Solid, Liquid, Gas ■ Last week, we tested different candies in warm water and also discovered that new materials with new properties are being invented all the time. ○ Creating a need to know: Video: Exploration 1, then discuss: ■ Q: What other materials could you use to build a house? Possible answers: straw, dry mud, snow/ice, fabric ■ Watch video: exploration 3, then ask question but don’t take a response, just let them think about it: ■ Q: How could you change the properties of paper to make it better to build with? What would you do? ○ Sharing objective, in general terms: Today, you are going to build a tall tower out of nothing but note cards and paper clips. Then, you’ll take that tower apart and build a strong tower. 2. Content Delivery (35 minutes) ○ Watch Activity: Step 1 - Instead of each person getting the supplies, partner them up and between the two of them, they will need: ■ 20 note cards ■ 16 paperclips ■ 1 ruler ■ 2 scissors ● They may sit somewhere in the learning lounge ● Get them to quiet down. Remind them that we need to stop to watch and listen to the videos as we experiment. Right now, we need to watch another video before we begin with the note cards. ● Watch Step 2 - then, let them see if they can come up with 3 ways to make the cards stand up. No paperclips or scissors just yet! (2 min) ● Watch Step 3 - Have each pair discuss at their tables the ways they came up with. (1 min) ● Watch Step 4 - Discuss first question as a whole: Do you have any ideas for how you can use your cards to make a tower? Take 2 or 3 responses. ● Watch Step 5 - Begin making a tall tower out of materials given. (5 min) ● Watch Step 6 - Look around, without moving, then discuss with your partner ways you could make yours better. (1 min)

Watch Step 7 - Pass out a worksheet to each learner. Have them answer questions 1 & 2. (2 min) Watch Step 8 - Then begin making a strong tower. (5 min) Watch Step 9 - Pass out books to test strong tower (3 min) Watch Step 10 - Have them discuss with their partners and answer questions 3 & 4. (2 min)
3. Closure (5-7 minutes) ○ Have them clean up their area and dismiss by tables to come sit up front. ○ Watch final video - Exploration 5 ○ Allow 3 groups to share their science investigation.
