An insight into the ministry of LCMS Long-term missionary Megan Birney serving Christ in Togo, West Africa

LCMS World Mission in Togo Happy July! I hope this month has brought you all great joy. I have spent almost the entirety of this month preparing for my departure to Togo. In between working, vacation bible school, and saying goodbye, I have been in a packing frenzy! :) God has truly blessed me in these preparations and I am so excited to begin my service on August 7th. In June, I attended LCMS World Mission Orientation at Concordia University in St. Paul, MN with 42 other long-term and career missionaries beginning their service this year. This training was an affirmation and encouragement of God’s call for me to serve in Togo. Togo, officially known as the Togolese Republic, is located between Ghana and Benin while settled beneath Burkina

Faso on the Atlantic Coast of French-speaking West Africa. Togo became independent from France in 1964 and LCMS World Mission began work there in 1980. The Lutheran Churches in Africa are in need of well-trained leaders and pastors. Togo is home of the Lutheran Center for Theological Studies (CLET) which serves the need of the church in Togo, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Benin, Burkina Faso, Congo, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. So what’s my part in this amazing ministry? Rev. Glenn Fluegge heads the leadership of the CLET and lives in Togo with his wife Susan and their five children, Samuel, Abigail, Caleb, Jesse, and Eliana. With my college degree and my experience work-

ing with children, God has prepared me to be a part of this ministry by appointing me as the home school teacher for Samuel, Abigail, and Caleb. I’m so excited for what God will teach these children through me and what he will help me learn through them.
