Chairman’s Mid-Year Report Anu Saxena

Here’s a few of the key initiatives we’re currently working on:

(ASC geosciences, inc.)

40-Year Accreditation – We are currently undergoing our

40-year accreditation evaluation through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Of the 6,900 chambers in the U.S., only 260 are accredited. This represents the top 4% of all chambers in the country, and the Lakeland Chamber is proud to have achieved the high standards set by the accreditation program for the past 40 years.

I have very much enjoyed serving as your Chairman this year and the opportunity to meet many of you at our Chamber events. Your Chamber has been actively working these past months to offer a broad menu of programs that meet the diverse needs of our 1,900 member businesses in these challenging economic times. We value the investment you have made in this organization, and want to report on our progress so far this year.

Vice Chair Melinda Harrison is chairing the accreditation task force, and working with the following oversight chairs in the nine accreditation areas being evaluated: • Governance – Tim Campbell (Clark, Campbell, Mawhinney & Lancaster, P.A.) • Finance – Walker Wilkerson (The NCT Group, CPAs, LLP) • Human Resources – Don Selvage (SHR Human Resources, LLC) • Government Affairs – Mark Wilson (Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc.) • Program Development – Maureen Shaw (Flower Cart Florist) • Communications – Sam Nimah (Southern Wine & Spirits of Florida) • Technology – Todd Baylis (Cipher Integrations, Inc.) • Facilities – Joe L. Ruthven (The Ruthvens) • Benchmarking – Paul Noris (Bank of Central Florida)

At our Annual Board Planning Retreat last fall, the Chamber’s board of directors adopted five key strategic issues to focus on this year. Strategy Groups were formed to address these issues, chaired by the Chamber’s Vice Chairs: • Communications, Vice Chair Sam Nimah (Southern Wine & Spirits of Florida) • Education, Vice Chair Alice Hunt (Hunt Construction of Central Florida, Inc.) • Organization Advancement, Vice Chair Melinda Harrison (Watson Clinic LLP) • Public Policy, Vice Chair Mark Wilson (Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc.) • Smart Community, Vice Chair Hugh Autry (Lakeland Regional Medical Center)

Following submittal of our accreditation application in August, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will make an announcement of our accreditation approval in November. I have full confidence we will again achieve the accreditation high standards this Chamber is known and respected for.

Working with board members assigned to these KSI groups, vice chairs are developing short and long-term strategies to seek a vibrant economic environment and high quality of life in Lakeland for our member businesses. We’ll look forward to reporting back to you as these KSI strategy groups move forward.

Establishment of a Middle Years Program (MYP) at Lawton Chiles Middle Academy –

For the past several months, a group of Lakeland business leaders have been working with the Polk County School Board to create a Middle Years Program (MYP), similar to the International Baccalaureate (IB) programs currently offered at two high schools in Polk County. I have been proud to be involved in this exploratory committee, and excited to confirm that we have the full support of the School Board and area business sponsors to establish a MYP program at Lawton Chiles Middle Academy this fall, which will be a feeder program into the two IB schools in our County. I am especially pleased that Lawton Chiles Middle Academy, with its

outstanding record of academic achievement under the leadership of Principal Sharon Neuman, has been chosen as the host school to launch the County’s first MYP program. The MYP will serve as a tremendous asset to our Chamber and the Lakeland Economic Development Council in marketing Lakeland as an ideal location to establish a business and retain the area’s existing businesses. Continued enhancements of our education system not only serve our students, but enable area employers to better recruit and retain qualified employees.

Also, look for the “Buy Lakeland. It makes good cents!” commercials that Bright House Networks has produced and will air on their cable channels over the next few months. Thanks to our Bright House partners for helping spread the word to “Buy Lakeland!”.

Please read this month’s Forum for further updates on what’s happening at the Chamber. We could not accomplish all we have this year in leading Lakeland’s business community without the active involvement and support of our members. Working together, we will continue to build Lakeland as THE community of choice to live, work and play. I hope to see you at an upcoming Chamber event! Best regards,

“Buy Lakeland. It makes good cents!” Campaign –

I want to encourage you to support your fellow Chamber members by doing business in Lakeland, and to prominently display the “Buy Lakeland” logo in your storefront or lobby. If you need a window cling to display, just e-mail [email protected] and we’ll get one to you.

Volunteers from 20 Chamber member companies all work within their contacts to grow the Chamber’s base of support and in turn, grow our impact on Lakeland’s economy. By combining all advertising, sponsorship and membership resources into one directed campaign, the Chamber is able to produce a confident budget for 2010 and allows Chamber supporters to do the same.

This year, Catalyst will be “growing green”! Throughout the 10 week campaign, we will be reducing paper use, learning more about reducing our carbon footprint and celebrating green spaces in Lakeland. The most exciting endeavor of the Catalyst Campaign will be on October 6 when the Chamber comes together to recognize the planting of healthy, Florida-friendly maples around Lake Mirror. Your company can be a part of this celebration by sponsoring one of the twelve trees we will plant. For more information on this partnership, please contact your Catalyst volunteer or the Campaign office.

Small Business of the Month Award presented

Twenty years ago, Denise Kilburn and Kathy Shufflebarger recognized a need for pediatric therapies in our community. Through hard work and dedication their partnership has grown into their current outpatient therapy clinic for children.

Located at 1215 E. Orange Street, Pediatric Therapy Services, Inc. (PTS) offers physical, speech and occupational therapies. Their building was custom

designed to enhance and stimulate the children’s experience at PTS.

Denise, Kathy and a staff of 20 therapists are dedicated to building a team consisting of patient, family and therapists. The therapies learned in the clinic have to be reinforced in the home to achieve successful outcomes. Each child is evaluated and given a customized therapy for their needs. They discover what a child loves, needs and craves then deliver a therapy treatment program that supports those desires. Successful outcomes can range from a child mastering a single new task to completely overcoming their disability. PTS is constantly striving to provide their patients and staff with the latest innovation in therapy. They provide employees with advance training annually and offer internships to graduate students who need clinical instruction for the completion of their education program. Denise and Kathy believe they must

Over 100 people attend Chamber’s first Pink Slip Party Just over 100 people were in attendance at the Chamber’s first Pink Slip Party held on May 19. Everyone from new grads to victims of recent lay-offs came to Natalie’s Sports Bar & Grill to commiserate about the job market and learn about the resources Lakeland has to offer. Presenting Sponsor Action Professional Recruiters was on hand to review resumes and offer advice on open positions.

According to Marsha Leap, Leap Ahead Professional Development, job seekers are charged with finding new and more creative ways to market themselves and their skills. Not only was Marsha on hand to dispense advice, Leap Ahead Professional Development offered a résumé review/interview coaching session as a door prize. Even though Deb McCutcheon, with sponsor company Action Professional Recruiters, didn’t have many open positions to offer job seekers, she was encouraged by the positive attitude of

those in attendance. She and her co-workers were available to accept resumes and offer a friendly ear to those out of work, some for as many as 18 months.

With the success of the inaugural Pink Slip Party, plans are already underway to schedule one in the Fall! Look for more information coming soon!

WUSF’s Robin Sussingham was on hand to interview some of the participants. Many thanks to our generous sponsors: Action Professional Recruiters; CreativElaborations Design Studio & Natalie’s Sports Bar & Grill! Without you, this event would not have taken place! Flying Tigers, Lakeland Electric host Business After Hours

The rain stayed away to make the May Business After Hours a success! The Lakeland Flying Tigers and Lakeland Electric teamed up to provide a full evening of food, fun and entertainment. Chef Thomas Mackinnon believed that “if you GRILL it, they will come”, and presented a fabulous buffet of traditional ball park food with some snazzy extras. With more than 200 people in attendance, you can bet that much of the conversation started over a mini beef wellington or stuffed crab! The experience at Joker Marchant Stadium would not have been complete without some ice cream for Chamber members and guests provided by Dairy Queen North owner Linda Brown. Lakeland Electric representative Barbie Taylor was on hand to receive the plaque of appreciation and a warm acknowledgement from the crowd. Zach Burek, General Manager of the Lakeland Flying Tigers accepted the plaque of appreciation and then invited everyone to enjoy a great baseball game between Lakeland and the Jupiter Hammerheads. What could be better than a night at the ballpark? Thanks to Lakeland Electric and the Lakeland Flying Tigers for hosting a very successful and enjoyable event.

Leadership Lakeland celebrates graduation of Class XXVI Under the leadership of Stacy Campbell Domineck, Polk Works, 28 business people graduated from the 26th class of Leadership Lakeland. Established in 1983, the annual program is designed to identify leadership and enhance existing leadership in our community. Leadership Lakeland does not take public policy positions or advocate any individual viewpoint. The program unites leaders from diverse backgrounds and perspectives to improve their ability to lead effectively. The program offers its

members a broad range of experiences and insights about the community, its people, its needs and its services. Leadership Lakeland is committed to participating in the succession planning of Lakeland's leadership.

The program is designed to create better informed leaders for our community and offer opportunities to build and strengthen relationships.

At le, Stacy CampbellDomineck, Polk Works, Chairman of Class XXVI, gave her closing remarks to the class.

The Challenge Is On

Leadership Lakeland is a fabulous experience that not only builds relationships and teamwork within its classes, it also generates an enthusiasm for making Lakeland a better place to live. The coordinators of the program work tirelessly to provide opportunities and experiences throughout the year to introduce its participants to the inner workings of our community.

Class XXVI, like all classes before us, graduated from the program with a desire to give back to our community and reinvigorate others to give back. Organizations throughout Lakeland need us and our resources to fulfill their missions. Some people choose to give the gift of money. Not everyone is in a position to do so. Everyone, however, can give their time. After all, volunteering is one of the highest expressions of citizenship in action. Thus was born the idea of “The Challenge.” Leadership Lakeland Class XXVI is challenging all past and future classes to see which class logs the most service hours per year. And the class with the most hours not only gets bragging rights for the year, they also win the Best Class 5 to 9 trophy. Class XXVI has committed to giving an additional 240 service hours each year. That is 29 participants giving an entire day each of service to our community on top of all the service each member individually gives. The Challenge of volunteer hours by class is simply a way to encourage all of us to reach out and invest time in our community – and what a fun way to do it. By pulling together all Leadership Lakeland classes, we can make a difference. So, how are we going to track these hours? The answer is Sweatmonkey.com, a website that helps you track your service hours. We have worked with Scott Fore, Class III alumnus, to have all of the Leadership Lakeland classes and participants registered in advance on Sweatmonkey.com. If you are registered with the alumni association you will receive an email from SweatMonkey.com. Make sure your email is up-to-date! If not, check with Lisa Oliver.

We saw the “Challenge” as a way to help make Lakeland an even better place to live and work. We know that the current classes can never catch up with the cumulative value of the dollars and time that prior classes have given! We hope that this “Challenge” gives our past and future classes a reason to band together in spirit for the betterment of our community.

Mr. Ross recently announced his candidacy to run for the U.S. House of Representatives representing Florida’s 12th District, currently held by U.S. Representative Adam Putnam. Representative Putnam has announced he is leaving Congress to run for Florida Commissioner of Agriculture in 2010. Mr. Ross provided a historical perspective of the insurance crisis in Florida and how the state has gotten to this point. He noted that government should not be a player, but a regulator. He presented his 4 Fundamental Principles of Dennis Ross: 1. Insurance is absolutely necessary to the economy. 2. Insurance needs to be backed by private capital. 3. Those who choose to live in high risk areas should assume the insurance liability (under Florida’s current system all Floridians assume a portion of the liability for coastal residents). 4. Mitigation is necessary in order for homes to be retrofitted to withstand storms. In an open forum, Chairman’s Circle Chairman Timothy F. Campbell (Clark, Campbell, Mawhinney & Lancaster, P.A.) asked members for updates and announcements and their views on the economic outlook. Overall, members expressed they were seeing positive indicators, with several reporting they have remained steady or have seen some improvement.
