ACTIVE RESEARCH
Hornak JP, Anjum S, Reynoso DA. Adjunctive ceftaroline in combination with
daptomycin or vancomycin for complicated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia after monotherapy failure. The University of Texas Medical Branch. Status: Complete; Pending publication.
We are performing a retrospective review of patients treated at UTMB since 2016 with
these ceftaroline-adjunctive regimens for refractory MRSA bacteremia following vancomycin and/or daptomycin monotherapy failure. We are most interested in assessing overall rates and time to microbiologic cure, mortality, general case mix, and the role of source control, or lack thereof.

EDUCATIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS
I. Curriculum Development
Residency elective: “Antimicrobial Stewardship” (UTMB Dept. of Internal Medicine)
Mentors: Drs. David A. Reynoso, Philip H. Keiser, and Lindsay K. Sonstein
A self-conceptualized, customized, four-week elective designed to provide a thorough
introduction into the field of antibiotic stewardship (AS). Key components include participation in myriad daily activities with the UTMB Antimicrobial Stewardship Program, completion of online educational modules in AS, and identification of an area of scholarly interest for eventual project identification, completion, and dissemination. The elective is a pilot project and will tentatively become a permanent feature in the internal medicine residency curriculum at UTMB. This appears to be one of the first—if not the very first—such residency offerings in the United States.
