Shakaria Smith 10/24/18 Journal 5 As my time as an UNIV Graduate Student leader is coming to an end I must say that I am proud of my students and how they have grown so much! My students are been learning more about themselves in regards to their development as a college student. Transition is a key term for freshman students in college. Schlossberg defines transition as, any event or non-event that results in changed relationships, routines, assumptions, and role. There are four key influences of the transition theory includes situation, support, self and strategies. Throughout the semester I feel as though my UNIV students have been learning more about support, self and strategies while transitioning into college students. Support is a main factor for students to excel effectively in college. The lack of support students have can determine if they will actually graduate from college. My UNIV 101 students have learned more about the different types of support that they have. Such as support from their professors and other staff on campus, their peers and family members. My students know they are not alone on their journey to complete college. Strategies is another important factor when transitioning into college. Throughout the entire semester myself and my educator have discussed many different strategies for our students to succeed in higher education. For example during my lecture I discussed different strategies for note taking, test anxiety, how to prepare for exams and how to understand lectures. I hope that the strategies they have learned throughout this semester can help them become better college students in the future! Lastly self, is one of if not the most key factor of becoming a college student. Self in relation to transition theory is broken down into two categories which are personal/demographic characteristics and psychological resources. My
students have been learning more about their identity, who they are, where they come from and how to deal with different obstacles they may face as a college students. I have had a great experience working as a UNIV 101 graduate student leader. I hope that my students continue to strive throughout their college experience.
