Jesus. the Scribes and the Adulterous Woman A Tract Book Essay By Anthony J. Fejfar, B.A., J.D., Esq., Coif © Copyright 2007 by Anthony J. Fejfar In the Christian Gospel of John, Chapter 8, Jesus is described by the Evangelist as encountering an adulterous woman brought to him by the Jewish Lawyer-Scribes. Under Mosaic Law, the penalty for adultery was being stoned to death. The Scribes asked Jesus what punishment the woman should receive. Jesus, instead of speaking, bends over and draws a circle in the dirt with his finger. But the Scribes kept pestering him for an answer. Jesus said, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first one to throw a stone at her.” John, Ch. 8, v. 7. Then, Jesus used his finger to make a cross inside the circle. This symbol, The Holy Cross, was the sign of the House of Caesar, also the Druid Cross.
Jesus was reminding the
Scribes that Roman Law applied, and that adultery was not a crime under Roman Law. The Scribes saw this, and saw that they were being accused of Treason against Rome, and walked away.
