Letter from Birmingham Jail is about Dr. Martin Luther King’s wanting to stop racism and to stop racists from being mean to other people. He used appeals to ethos to get authority and credibility. King begins his argument with various appeals to ethos. “My dear fellow Clergymen” (1). This is an appeal to ethos because it uses authority and credibility. This advances his purpose by being nice by saying my dear fellow, and people are more likely to listen to people who are nice to them. The second reason he offers is by quoting their words “unwise and untimely” (1). This is an appeal to ethos because it shows that he got respect and listening to their point of view people are more likely to listen to people who listen. The third reason he offers is, “ I have the honor of serving as president of the southern christian leadership conference an organization operating in every southern states, with headquarters in Atlanta Georgia” (1). This is an appeal to ethos because it show that he got credibility. This advance his purpose by endingsegergation. Dr. Martin Luther King purpose for writing the “ Letter from Birmingham Jail “ was to stop segregation”. He used appeals to pathos to stop segregation in birmingham. King continues his argument with various appeals to pathos. “ Daddy why do white man treat colored people so mean”? This appeals to pathos because it has an emotional meaning behind it. A second example he offers is “ when you have seen hate filled policeman curses kick brutalize and even kill your black brothers and sisters with impunity”. This is an appeal to pathos because it makes the reader feel sad when he reads the story. This is advance his purpose by ending segregation on birmingham. This third example he offers is “when your humiliated day in and day out by nagging signs reading “white”and “colored”. This is an appeal to pathos because it makes the reader feel sad or depressed because it still happening right now. Dr.Martin Luther King’s purpose for writing the “ Letter from Birmingham Jail” was to “ end segregation in Birmingham “. He used appeals to Logos to persuade an audience by logical thoughts. Dr Martin Luther King is going to negotiation. The goal is to stop segregation in Birmingham. The logic is he going to negotiation and stop nonviolent direct action is needed to bring about changes. King advanced his purpose to stop racism because it was only right to stop it and because white man kept restricting black man that there were going to kill them. He did this because he cared about people and especially his own people. This is important because it show how people are in this world.
