Jennifer Steplowski AED 5150- Computer Graphics for the Classroom Title: Extra, Extra! Read all about it! Grade Level: 9-12 Photoshop level: intermediate to advanced Sessions: approximately 4- 1 hour class periods Content: Students will create a magazine cover using themselves as the cover story. They will take a photo and retouch it, find interesting things about themselves to highlight as 'stories' and use that to create their layout. This will act as a final project since it draws upon knowledge of many things covered throughout the course. These skills include: -using layers (and keeping them organized) -photo manipulation and retouching -clone tool -healing brush tool -dodge and burn tool -using filters -using brushes (and possibly actions) -basic toolbar use -InDesign for assembling final layout Objectives: • VA.HS.1.1: Apply materials, techniques, media technology, and processes with sufficient skill, confidence, and sensitivity that personal intentions are carried out in artworks. • VA.HS.3.5: Reflect and analyze the personal experiences that influence the development of personal artwork. • VA.HS.4.3: Analyze relationships of works of art to one another in terms of history, aesthetics, and culture, justifying conclusions made in the analysis and using conclusions to inform personal artwork. Materials: -Student Photograph -Computer -Adobe Photoshop and InDesign -Printer (ink and paper) Introduction: The lesson will start off by looking at various examples of magazine covers for layout ideas. They will include both old and new covers and will vary in subject and origin. Students will then have time to reflect upon what makes them unique and record it in their sketchbooks. The rest of the designated sessions will be used to work on their layout.

This will be a final project that demonstrates the skills students learned over the semester. Students will learn about photo retouching and some basic InDesign, to complete this lesson. Development and Procedures: Students will think about what makes them unique. They will write down a list of qualities or accomplishments in their sketchbooks. They then get to make up a magazine title and all of its highlighted stories that are featured on the cover. Accommodations/ Adaptations: Students may wish to honor someone else and are allowed to do so upon asking for permission. A tablet may be used for those students who have trouble using a mouse. I will be walking around and assisting those who need further help. Closure: After everyone has completed the lesson, we will have a short discussion on assignments that demonstrate good layouts and photo retouching. Students will then assist in preparing prints for display and doing an end of the year classroom clean-up. Homework: Have students think about certain things that highlight themselves. Since this magazine cover is autobiographical, students should think about how they are different or what they may want to celebrate. They should also bring in a photo of themselves. Assessment: Students will be graded based on a 5 point scale in Teacher Reflection: 1. What problems did you encounter (if any) when creating your practice files? -The only problems I encountered were finding the correct size (or high-res) image. Students will need to bring in their own digital image (I can always offer to take their photo in class if they do not have access to a camera). I also had some InDesign issues, but think I will have them all ironed out by the time I have to teach the lesson. 2. What problems did you anticipate your students encountering? -Students may have a little trouble getting used to InDesign, but the programs are highly compatible and after the tutorial, they should have no problems.

3. How do you plan on managing common student problems (examples could be computer errors, problems not understanding the lesson, students who become easily frustrated)? -Students are always encouraged to save their files every few minutes and back them up at the end of the day to minimize the risk for losing their progress. I plan on walking around the classroom and addressing individual needs, when needed and will be available after class if students have any further issues in understanding the lesson. 4. How do you anticipate resolving the following situations: absents students who weren’t there for instruction, students who finish early, students with special needs? -All students will receive a student handout with a summary of the project and requirements. If students are absent, they can use this as their guide and come to me with any other questions. Since this is a cumulative, end of the year project there won't be many new things to learn. If students miss the InDesign tutorial (which should only take 15-20 minutes), they can come to me for those instructions.
