Boudicat! Robin Price “Cat-tastic!”

—London Evening Standard

• Author’s previous books sold more than 20,000 copies Historically accurate and full of enchanting wordplay, this fanciful tale is a clever, cat-based retelling of the Boudican uprising against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire. Set in the Land of the Kitons, the adventures of the wealthy, six-clawed hero, Spartapuss, are captured through his diary entries. Queen Boudicat—his wife’s aunt—has been cheated out of her kingdom by the Romans. She’s declared war and wishes for Spartapuss to join her rebel army. Warrior queens do not take “No” for an answer, even when it seems impossible for a tiny tribe of Kitons to take on the mighty Feline Empire! So the Micini tribe held another Great Meeting in the Great Hall to decide how to rescue their Great Queen. I shall leave out any further greats in order to save paper, which is becoming expensive since the wasp trouble over in Fleagypt, where it is made. Now Queen Boudicat spoke up. “My warriors. I hope you have been busy while I’ve been gone.” The Lords of the Micini cowered at the back of their hall and did not dare to answer. “Is our army strong and ready for war? I trust that we are ready. But my ears must be deaf. For I cannot hear sword or claw being sharpened.” There followed a guilty silence. No one dared to open their mouth as the Queen paced up and down the hall like a tiger at the Circus. Stopping next to Mane, she asked: “Are my eyes blind? For I see no war chariots parked outside my hall?” At last, the Arch Mewid spoke up: “They are not yet ready for war with Rome, Queen Boudicat.” “Not ready?” said the Queen, in mock surprise. “Why not? I would throw myself and my daughters into that pit, rather than live under Roman boot!”

I Always, ALWAYS Get My Way Thad Krasnesky Illustrations by David Parkins • Illustrator’s previous books sold more than 100,000 copies From carefully aimed pouts and shifting blame to the threat of an all-out tantrum, this laughout-loud story for kids and adults focuses on the clever antics, advantage-taking, limit-testing, and childhood shenanigans of three-year-old Emmy. When Emmy spills juice and her dad’s pants get “orange-hosed,” she takes refuge behind Mom’s knee. Expecting a reprimand, Emmy is surprised when Mom tells Dad, “Now, sweetheart, you should let it be. Speaking to children on their own terms, this critically acclaimed book sensitively establishes boundaries for youngsters. In a nonthreatening, engaging manner, this guide teaches kids that when it comes to their body, there are some parts that are for “no one else to see” and empowers them to tell a parent or teacher if someone touches them inappropriately. Telling the story of a gender-neutral child who is inappropriately touched by an uncle’s friend, this tale delivers a powerful moral when the youngster reveals the offender and the parents praise the child’s bravery. Most importantly, this narrative assures young ones that sexual molestation is not their fault, and by speaking out, the child will continue to grow big and strong. A “Suggestions for the Storyteller” section is also included to assist in facilitating a comfortable discussion afterwards, thereby helping to prevent the unthinkable from happening to any child. With inspirational rhyming and beautiful illustrations, this is a compelling and uplifting message of what is right and wrong. Jill Starishevsky is an assistant district attorney who has prosecuted hundreds of sex offenders and dedicated her career to seeking justice for victims of child abuse and sex crimes. She is the founder of HowsMyNanny.com, a service that enables parents to purchase a license plate for their child’s stroller so the public can report positive or negative nanny observations. Questioning the mysterious properties and origins of nature that still baffle scientists to this day, reflections on life are charmingly posed with the innocent perspective of a small child. Two young children search everywhere for the instructions used for making them—in the chest under the bed and a dark forest nook, on a mountain ledge high overhead and a shelf holding books—only to be led to the unbelievable discovery that the instructions are right there inside them in a jillion places all at once. Written to be accessible to young children, this book details key information on where DNA is housed and how it is used in our daily functions, all while laying a foundation for scientific inquiry and pursuit.

In the winter of 1901, in a field outside of Beaumont, Texas, the course of the world’s energy choices changed forever with the discovery of an oil reserve. This is the iconic Texas oil story of Patillo Higgins, Anthony Lucas, and a gusher the likes of which had never been seen there. Approachable and detailed, this account explains the Spindletop oil field and how it initially produced a geyser that shot 200 feet in the air and went on to produce more than 80,000 barrels of oil per day, marking the birth of the modern petroleum industry and making Texas synonymous with oil. The narrative dramatically outlines the history of the oil industry and how it has changed the world for better and for worse. Complementing the main story is information on alternative sources of energy.

Simeon’s Story An Eyewitness Account of the Kidnapping of Emmett Till Simeon Wright and Herb Boyd • Co-op available • Advertising in Crisis, Oxford American, and Skipping Stones A modern tragedy, this story has had a great impact on race relations in America. Emmett Till’s kidnapping and murder, a grotesque crime in a Southern backwater that became the catalyst for the civil rights movement, is explained in this dramatic narrative by the cousin who was present every step of the way. Simeon Wright saw and heard his cousin Emmett whistle at Caroline Bryant at a grocery store and slept in the same bed with him when her husband came in and took Emmett away; he was there during the aftermath of the murder, and at the trial, where his father testified. This gripping coming-of-age memoir may not bring closure to the Till case, whose perpetrators were left unpunished, but it will set the facts straight about that lifechanging incident in 1955. Simeon Wright is Emmett Till’s cousin. A major figure in the documentary, The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till, he has been profiled in the Washington Post and has appeared on Tavis Smiley and Court TV. He lives in Countryside, Illinois. LAWRENCE HILL BOOKS JANUARY

It was a typically bright Mississippi morning, when the August ground is blistering hot hours before breakfast is even served. There was general excitement around our house because this was Monday and the first day of the cotton harvest on our sharecropper farm, and because Bobo was with us. (We didn’t know his name was Emmett until after he was kidnapped and killed.) It wasn’t unusual for grown ups to visit us from up North, but to have a relative your own age was special, and we could hardly contain our excitement. Bobo had kept me up all night, telling me all kinds of stories and what it was like in Chicago now that the weather was changing. I asked him what he would be doing up there if he hadn’t come to visit us. He said he would probably be having fun with his other friends up there. Summers in Chicago, he told me, were wonderful and he really enjoyed going to Lincoln Park where there were rides, picnics, swimming, and a variety of outdoor events. I fell asleep that night and dreamed of Chicago and playing in the park with Bobo and his friends.

Raising Twins From Pregnancy to Preschool Shelly Vaziri Flais, MD, FAAP “Who better to hold your hand and help prepare you for the multiple joys (and challenges) of parenting twins than a pediatrician-mom of twins?” —Laura A. Jana, MD, FAAP, coauthor, Heading Home with Your Newborn “Helps parents of multiples hit the ground running and build their skills, efficiency, and confidence . . . Her twin tips will help all families.” —Marc Weissbluth, MD, FAAP, author, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child and Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Twins • $40,000 advertising budget; co-op available • Advertising in Healthy Children (October, January) and Twins (September/October, November/December, January/February)

Excerpt: How the Twin-Parenting Experience Changes Over the Early Years: The job of parenting multiples will require different skills from you at different stages. The earlier weeks and months with twins will require stamina and an ability to streamline your daily tasks in order to survive with some semblance of sanity remaining. As time wears on, you can ease out of survival mode, and you will shift gears into a different skill set. You will become a master of understanding human emotions and interactions as you navigate all the different personalities that live under your roof. You’ll have as good of a grasp of interpersonal relations as any diplomat! Pregnancy: During your multiples pregnancy, you’ll want to channel your nervous energy into preparing your ‘nest’ for your babies. Twins and all multiples tend to deliver earlier than singleton babies, so you’ll want to prepare in case this happens. Of course, another reason you should prepare early is because your belly will get quite large and uncomfortable as you approach your due date. You can start attending your local twin club meetings to meet other parents of multiples and start collecting helpful tips. Pregnancy is also the time to enlist family and friends for help in the early weeks and months of your twins’ lives.

Offering practical, “can-do” advice for anxious parents expecting or already caring for twins, this handbook guides from the first news of twins’ impending arrival and continues through their early childhood. From how to set up the nursery, synchronize feeding and sleeping schedules, and potty train two children at once to discipline, family dynamics, and fostering individuality, this doctor-cum-mom shares her experiences of what works and what doesn’t and encourages parents to not only survive but also enjoy their twins’ early years. A special appendix on caring for multiples as well as preterm babies is also included. Shelly Vaziri Flais, MD, FAAP, is a board-certified pediatrician, a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the mother of four children, including a set of twins. Excerpt from the Introduction: Learning from other people's mistakes: This book offers you O.P.E.—Other People's Experience. I've assembled the best wisdom I've gleaned from almost fifteen years of observing families around the world, and hearing real-life confessions of what parents wish they had known before their families descended into crisis. This book centers on three questions: 1) What causes a marriage to go south? 2) What causes a child to develop problems? 3) What can you do to prevent this in families, before it's too late? This book is preventive medicine that can help couples stay happily married and raise happy kids at the same time. Unfortunately, to get to the good news, first I have to begin with some bad news that may be a bitter pill for you to swallow. All my time observing families abroad and listening to families at home has convinced me of one thing: Any worries you have about your children are much more connected to your marriage than you probably realize.

64

Addressing a common, destructive pattern in marriages, this guide helps couples reduce the distance in their marriage, thereby reducing the emotional baggage projected onto the children. When a marriage drifts apart, spouses tend to drift toward their children, creating an emotional burden that causes children to act out. Making children the center of family lives seems child friendly but it creates demanding, entitled children and starves the marriage of intimacy. Instructing spouses on how to identify the ways they unknowingly distance from each other this book show how to prevent the slow drift toward divorce. Putting marriage first also reduces the temptation of parents to look to the children to fulfill their intimacy needs, freeing children to grow into their own identity and learn self-reliance as they pursue their own passions. This guide helps couples balance family relationships to recapture the joy of marriage and take pride in contented, selfreliant children. David Code is an Episcopal minister and family coach who blogs on the topics of marriage and parenting for a Pennsylvania newspaper site. He founded the Center for Staying Married & Raising Great Kids, and has written for the Wall Street Journal. He lives in University Park, Maryland. The Busy Family’s Guide to Spirituality Practical Lessons for Modern Living From the Monastic Tradition David Robinson “A truly fresh and new resource for all who want their homes and families to be places of nurturing, safety, and hope. This is practical and real and hope-filled, a must for every family—of every configuration.” —Laura Swan, author, Engaging Benedict and The Forgotten Desert Mothers “Because the Christian family is a little faith community, Robinson discovers insights for family living from the sixth-century writings of St. Benedict, founder of monastic communities.” —Catholic Spirit “His concept of parenting is deliberate, persistent, and guided by a deep belief that God wants the family to experience God’s love on a daily basis.” —Presbyterians Today • Co-op available • Advertising in Faith & Family (September) and MomSense (October)

Excerpt: Benedict offers us three basic beginning steps to establish the routine of a spiritual life. They are prayer, study, and love. First of all, every time you begin a good work, you must pray to God most earnestly to bring it to perfection. In prayer we enter into a personal conversation with God as our friend and guide. We take a second step into family spirituality when we study God’s guidebook, the Scriptures. Through regular time in study of the Bible, the light of God's wisdom begins to fill our thoughts and the voice of God's love fills our ears. Yet life with God is not only about words, but also about deeds. The third beginning step into family spirituality involves putting love into action in the places where we live and work. As we practice a life of love in action over months and years, we will grow together as a family. Such growth doesn’t come instantly or quickly. Like a growing forest, family spirituality does not spring up overnight. Love and wisdom emerge in our lives like fir saplings springing up from the earth. They need time, rich soil, sun and water. To change from selfish ways to spiritual ways requires time, patience, true guidance, along with love. There are other ways to live as a family, including dead-end alleyways, wanting ways full of lists and demands, selfish ways leading to boredom, and the modern freeways of distraction carrying us nowhere.

Drawing on timeless principles of monastic communal living, this spiritual guide for families offers effective tools to meet many challenges and counteract the divisive forces that can splinter a healthy home. Cultivating a sense of togetherness and nurturing the spiritual development of both the family and its individual members is a challenge that many find difficult to meet. Though hectic schedules and competing interests chip away at the sense of community and the support systems that family members need to thrive, each chapter of this book includes a practical lesson from the rule of St. Benedict and the Benedictine traditions which have been cornerstones of Western Christian monastic life for millennia. Spiritual practice, making time, discipline, sharing, hospitality, and changing family dynamics are some of the topics addressed in this wise and wide-ranging handbook, while exercises, checklists, and ideas for family activities are included at the end of every chapter. The gentle, reassuring tone offers encouragement to both traditional and nontraditional families, and reinforces the importance of parenting as a spiritual calling. David Robinson is the author of The Christian Family Toolbox. He is pastor of Community Presbyterian Church and a Benedictine Oblate of Mount Angel Abbey. He lives in Cannon Beach, Oregon. Developing Children’s Palates So They’ll Love to Eat Everything

Unlocking Your Child’s Intellectual Potential

Nancy Tringali Piho • Co-op available Approaching its topic with humor, style, and a critical eye, this unique guidebook enables parents to provide a healthy and diverse diet for their children. Instead of providing yet another guide to kids’ nutrition, a medical discussion, a treatise on the perils of obesity, or a parenting primer on good table manners, this study demonstrates that children need to be taught how to eat well just as they are taught to walk. With detailed guidance from nutritionists, physicians, scientists, and chefs, this handbook details how to find the right foods, how to overcome recurring problems, and emphasize the healthiest elements. Dealing with the picky eater and the real worries about obesity and good nutrition, this survey posits that youngsters eat the way they do because of how the parents themselves eat—and shows how to combat any and all bad habits. Offering plenty of information on how to go about serious change and where to find the best resources, this reference is guaranteed to broaden the horizon of any child’s menu. Nancy Tringali Piho works in public relations for a number of national food industry associations. She lives in Washington, DC. The book also includes a discussion of preschools to help parents decide if an early formal education is best for their youngsters. • Co-op available

The skills required to be an effective teacher, disciplinarian, mentor, and communicator are crucial for the successful parent–child relationship, and this guide to parenting shows how to learn, teach, discover, observe, and plan for the future. At the core of this manual is the concept that every family is unique and all families have strengths, and it encourages parents to educate themselves about raising children in a supportive and loving way.

Based on interviews with many grandparents and members of parent groups, this guide addresses the uncertainties grandparents feel about their roles, especially if they live far away from their grandchildren. The discussion shows that the lives of grandparents today are a reflection of changes in society and that they may have to reinvent themselves. The secrets offered are meant to be uplifting as well as practical and include tips on awareness, balance, communication, discipline, health, knowledge, and joy. Within each chapter are ideas for outings and activities at home, with reminders about planning ahead, age-appropriate expectations, and coping with meltdowns.

The Unabashedly Human Experience of Raising Kids with Disabilities

Empowering Parents to Beat Anorexia Nervosa

Edited by Yantra Bertelli, Jennifer Silverman, and Sarah Talbot “A groundbreaking book . . . wise, nonconformist, and absolutely punk rock!” —China Martens, author, The Future Generation • Advertising in Bitch magazine and Hip Mama The stories in this collection provide parents of special needs kids with a dose of both laughter and reality. Featuring works by socalled alternative parents who have attempted to move away from mainstream thought, this anthology carefully considers the implications of raising children with disabilities. From professional writers to novice storytellers, including original essays by Robert Hudson-Rummel, Ayun Halliday, and Kerry Cohen, this assortment of authentic, shared experiences from parents in the know is a partial antidote to the stories that misrepresent, ridicule, and objectify disabled children and their parents. Yantra Bertelli was one of the founding publishers of RAG Magazine, a moderator for Hipmama.com, and has essays published in Breeder and Essential Hipmama. She lives in Seattle. Jennifer Silverman was an activist with m*a*m*a, a collective of radical mothers, has been published in Hip Mama and Off Our Backs, and has written for a variety of parenting publications. She lives in New York City. Sarah Talbot is an assistant principal at a comprehensive high school in Washington. Her writing has appeared in Best Books for High School Students and Breeder: Stories for the New Generation of Mothers. She lives in Seattle.

June Alexander and Daniel Le Grange Empowering families to heal their loved ones who are suffering from anorexia nervosa, this informative book offers the Maudsley Approach as a successful treatment. Encouraging parents to play an active and positive role in their child’s journey toward health, this account presents 10 case studies—as well as the author’s own struggles with the disorder—that provide insight into the illness itself and illustrate the promising, evidence-based results. A history of anorexia is outlined, and the development of the Maudsley Approach and its ongoing research is further explored. Written in an easily accessible style, this well-researched argument will help families hand the control back to their recovering adolescents. June Alexander is a journalist with 30 years of experience and a former anorexic whose personal experience with an eating disorder inspired her interest in family-based treatment. Daniel Le Grange is a professor of psychiatry and behavioral neuroscience as well as the director of the Eating Disorders Program at the University of Chicago. He is the author and coauthor of several books, including Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder and Treating Bulimia in Adolescents: A Family-Based Approach. He lives in Chicago. Teen 2.0 What Every Parent, Educator, and Student Needs to Know About Ending Teen Turmoil Robert Epstein, PhD • Author’s previous books sold more than 20,000 copies • New in paper Arguing that adolescence is an unnecessary period of life that people are better off without, this groundbreaking study shows that teen confusion and hardships are caused by outmoded systems that were designed to destroy the continuum between childhood and adulthood. Documenting how teens are isolated from adults and are forced to look to their media-dominated peers for knowledge, this discussion contends that by infantilizing young people, society does irrevocable harm to their development and well-being. Instead, parents, teachers, employers, and others must rediscover the adults in young people by giving them authority and responsibility as soon as they exhibit readiness. Teens are highly capable—in some ways more than adults—and this landmark discussion offers paths for reaching and enhancing the competence in America’s youth. Robert Epstein, PhD, is the former editor in chief of Psychology Today, a contributing editor to Scientific American Mind, and the host of the radio show Psyched! A visiting scholar at the University of California–San Diego and former university research professor at the California School of Professional Psychology, he is the founder and director emeritus of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies and the developer of many parenting, adolescence, and other competency tests.
