Installing and Managing the Softgrid Client (3/2008)
Installation 1. Verify the client computer is in Active Directory before installing. 2. Install Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, 2.0 , & 3.0 via Windows Update. 3. If this is a Windows Vista machine. UAC must be disabled for operation of some applications. 4. Run the install of the SoftGrid client located at: https://umdrive.memphis.edu/wasugg/SoftgridClient 5. Accept the License Agreement. 6. Select the Destination Folder; accept default. 7. Select the Cache Settings. Accept the default value or increase if HD space permits. The largest permitted value is 64 GB. A larger cache size will permit more applications to be stored locally versus being streamed. 64 GB or 65536 MB is suggested if possible.
Uncheck, “Skip advanced data storage settings and accept defaults” before continuing.
8. Setup the SoftGrid Data Location. Accept defaults.
The Global Data Location will store the system cache files for all used SoftGrid applications. This cache size will increase until the maximum size is reached as specified in Step 4. Specify a location that can permit a cache of this size.
The Preferred Drive Letter will be a mount point for all used Softgrid applications. Specify a drive letter of Q. SoftGrid applications require this drive letter to be Q!
Accept the default value for User-specific Data Location.
9. Setup Desktop Configuration Server as shown.
10.Install. Reboot and done!!!
Managing
The SoftGrid client can be managed via the SoftGrid Client Management console located in the Control Panel under Administrative Tools. •
To refresh your client with the latest server information, right click on your Desktop Configuration Server and select Refresh Server as shown below.
•
To fully cache an application (needed for laptop customers who will be using an application off the network), right click on an application and select Load as shown below.
NOTE: Laptop users will also need to launch any application they want to use offline once while on the network before disconnecting. This sets needed permissions for offline use of any application.
•
An application can be unloaded performing the same steps by selecting Unload for an application that is cached. This function is mainly used as a troubleshooting technique. Unloading does not reduce the size of the file cache.
•
The client can be put in Offline Mode by right clicking on the SoftGrid on Localhost item in the left pane and selecting Properties. Go the Connectivity tab. Check Work Offline as shown in the picture. Also note the Limit disconnected operation to option. Set the amount of time a user can be offline without needing to authenticate with the SoftGrid servers.
