Steps to Install PIX 6.3 image in PIX firewall. 1. Prepare TFTP Server a. Install the SolarWinds-TFTP-Server software on a local (inside network) Windows PC which should be accessible from PIX.

b. Copy the “pix635.bin” file in “C:\TFTP-Root” on the TFTP server PC. c. Open TFTP server console as shown below.

d. The following screen appears. Select “File > Configure”.

e. Click on Security tab and select Transmit and Receive files option as shown below and apply.

f. The following window appears, don’t close this window.

2. Prepare TFTP Server a. Login to PIX console. b. Get into “Enable” mode. c. Ping the TFTP server to verify connectivity.

d. Take configuration backup using the following command. write net [[TFTP_server_ip] : [filename] ]

[Example: write net 172.63.100.15 : pixbackup ] The backup of running configuration will be saved in “C:\TFTP-Root” folder on TFTP server with the file-name specified (pixbackup). Once the backup is complete, proceed to the following step.

e. Run the “Copy tftp flash”. When prompted for the remote address of the host, type the IP address of the TFTP server. When prompted for the source filename, type the name of the PIX software image (pix635.bin) kept on the TFTP server as shown below. pixfirewall# copy tftp flash Address or name of remote host [127.0.0.1]? 172.63.100.15 Source file name [cdisk]? pix635.bin copying tftp://10.1.1.1/pix635.bin to flash [yes|no|again]? yes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Received 1640448 bytes. Erasing current image. Writing 1640448 bytes of image. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Image installed.

f. The new image will be available after next reboot. Before reboot inform the client. If reboot is required, use the following command to reboot PIX: pix1# reload Proceed with reload? [confirm]

g. After rebooting, login to PIX and run “sh version” command to see if the PIX version has changed to 6.3(5) or not. h. Check the network connectivity.
