Louisville’s Hunter Cantwell

UK’s Tony Dixon has 958 career rushing yards.

QUARTERBACKS

RUNNING BACKS

Hunter Cantwell has been groomed three seasons for this moment. He takes over as the Cardinals’ signal caller having made four starts in his career. However, one of them just happened to be against Virginia Tech’s No. 1-rated defense in the Gator Bowl. He shredded the Hokies for three touchdowns, forever proving himself reliable under center. UK sophomore quarterback Mike Hartline hopes to show the same stability. Hartline has attempted only six passes in his career. Neither Hartline nor his backup, true freshman Randall Cobb, has played in a college game of this magnitude. Edge: U of L

The Cards’ Brock Bolen is a battering ram who’ll be asked to play a more complete running role this season. Though his 456 rushing yards last season don’t make for eyepopping numbers, he averaged 5.2 yards per carry, scored seven touchdowns and had two 100-yard rushing games. Bilal Powell adds some lightning to Bolen’s thunder, but he had only 24 carries last season. UK should feel better here than anywhere else on offense. Tony Dixon, with 958 career rushing yards and 290 yards as a receiver, is the most versatile back in the game. Derrick Locke and Alfonso Smith should be the fastest. If UK has a lead late, it might turn to powerful Moncell Allen. Edge: UK

RECEIVERS/ENDS

OFFENSIVE LINE

With everyone available, U of L likely would have the edge here, but the Cards have lost lots of talent through injury and attrition. Though Trent Guy could see some action, U of L’s top returning receiver, Scott Long, is out with a broken foot. Cantwell will have virtually all new receivers and tight ends. UK isn’t that much better off. Dicky Lyons Jr. is Guy the only true veteran of the bunch. He was third on the team with 56 catches for 655 yards and seven touchdowns. Tight ends Maurice Grinter and T.C. Drake played in all 13 games last season but combined for just five catches. The Cats have slightly more experience, but that could be the difference. Edge: UK

Each O-line is anchored by a veteran. For UK, it’s left tackle Garry Williams, who’s charged with guarding the blind side of rookie QB Mike Hartline. For U of L, it’s center Eric Wood, who will make his 38th straight start today. The Cards also have experience at left tackle in George Bussey, who has 25 straight starts. UK is breaking in a new Williams center (Jorge Gonzalez takes over for Eric Scott), and right guard was a concern throughout fall camp, with Jess Beets edging out Brad Durham (a converted tackle). Edge: Even

DEFENSIVE LINE

LINEBACKERS

Given its experience and talent, UK’s front four should be the strength of the defense. Jeremy Jarmon was a secondteam preseason All-Southeastern Conference pick. Myron Pryor has speed and power at tackle, and between Pryor and Jarmon is Corey Peters, who knows how to take advantage of drawing a single blocker. U of L has a veteran line — Pryor seniors Earl Heyman (25 straight starts) and Adrian Grady at tackle, junior L.D. Scott and senior Maurice Mitchell at end — but the Cards haven’t matched UK’s production. U of L’s four defensive linemen combined for seven sacks last season. Jarmon had nine on his own. Edge: UK

The Cards look big and fast at linebacker, but experience is a question mark. The best of U of L’s bunch might be Dexter Heyman, but he’s a true freshman. The other starters are junior-college transfers Antwon Canady and Jon Dempsey. Neither has played a Football Bowl Subdivision game. By contrast, the Cats Heyman start veterans Braxton Kelley, Micah Johnson and Johnny Williams, who have a combined 46 starts. Edge: UK

SECONDARY

SPECIAL TEAMS

UK junior Trevard Lindley is arguably the best cover corner on either team. He led the Cats in pass breakups for the past two seasons, and his three interceptions last season led the team. That’s almost half of the Cards’ total number of picks from a year ago. U of L had seven interceptions, and only two of those came from its returning core of five defensive backs. The Cats suffered a blow when Jones starting cornerback Paul Warford was declared academically ineligible. But experience at safety should help senior cornerback David Jones, whose only two starts have come at receiver. The Cards need senior Woodny Turenne to start playing like the top cornerback he was billed to be. Edge: UK

If this game comes down to a field goal, both teams may hope that it is the other team kicking. UK kicker Lones Seiber made just 11 of 20 field-goal attempts of 30 yards or more last season. But at least he has kicked in a college game. U of L’s potential place-kicker, Chris Philpott, is one of five true freshmen likely to Philpott play. The matchup of punters is virtually a wash: UK’s Tim Masthay averaged 39.8 yards per kick, U of L’s Cory Goettsche averaged 38.9. Each team also averaged 22.1 yards per kickoff return last season. Edge: Even

Key factors for victory U of L receivers vs. Trevard Lindley Doug Beaumont played in 12 games last season without a start, which makes him the veteran of U of L’s starting receivers. The man on the other side of the field, Troy Pascley, played in one game last season. The two have zero career receptions. UK’s giving them a rude welcome to the starting lineup — the chance to go head-to-head with Lindley, one of the most talented and experienced cornerbacks in the Southeastern Conference. If he wants to find a groove early with one of his newcomers, U of L quarterback Hunter Cantwell might want to pick on UK’s less-proven cornerback, David Jones.

Mike Hartline vs. U of L’s defense It would be tough enough for Hartline if he got to make his starting debut next week against Norfolk State in front of a friendly Commonwealth Stadium crowd. Instead, he gets his baptism in Papa John’s Stadium in front of a rowdy crowd and facing a U of L defense with something to prove. The secondary was a primary concern for the Cards last season, but there are veterans in

the defensive backfield. The goal will be to hurry Hartline into bad throws.

George Bussey vs. Jeremy Jarmon or Ventrell Jenkins In a year when the Cards’ receivers are so inexperienced, Cantwell may need a little more time to deliver the ball. That’s where Bussey, who has made 25 straight starts, comes in. The 306-pound left tackle will protect Cantwell’s blind side. U of L’s line allowed 24 sacks last season — the same number the Cats recorded, with Jenkins getting four. The 277-pound Jarmon had a team-high nine.

្Joker Phillips vs. Ron English Phillips, UK’s offensive coordinator, has to find a way to exploit U of L’s inexperienced linebackers. English, in his first year as the Cards’ defensive coordinator, must find a way to exploit an inexperienced UK quarterback. Phillips may try to pound away with a strong trio of running backs. English may try to counter by daring the Cats to throw. Phillips and English have never coached against each other, but this could be the game within the game that decides the outcome.
