Information Literacy and ICT Capability Progression and Continuity Key Stage 2 to 3 Information for: • Principals • EDT • Heads of Year 7 • Head of ICT • Cross Phase Liaison Group Background In February I invited Heads of ICT to join a working group to look at how we might improve progression and continuity in ICTs from primary to secondary. The increased use of ICTs in Primary schools had made some Heads of ICT aware of the need to review current practice. After the first meeting a small working group was formed made up of: Lee Anne Paterson WIS Sharon Cottle SIS Joe Leithhead KJS Chris Coyle CWBS Peter Woodhead EDT David Flint KGV The group has met three times and completed a rationale, an outline scheme of work and assessment framework. The target group will be Year 6 students for academic year 2007/8 and the plan is for them to begin work on a Bridging Unit after CNY 2008. They will continue working on the unit into Year 7. The bridging Unit is being designed so that it supports current activities and therefore can be blended into existing SoW and therefore avoid creating unnecessary additional work for staff. Rationale for a Bridging Unit Key in Information Literacy and ICT Capability Given that students in Primary school have a diverse experience, this bridging unit provides a common experience for all students so that when students arrive in Year 7 from different feeder schools, there is a common point of reference for both teacher and student. The bridging unit has assessment for learning built into it so students can reflect on their capabilities and understanding in Information Literacy and ICT. In this way the Bridging Unit will also give all teachers in Year 7 a better understanding of what students are capable of achieving when they use Learning Technology. The students’ work will be stored in the e portfolio of the CLC and because the e portfolio transfers with the student, their work can be accessed by all relevant secondary
staff ( Form Tutor, Teacher of ICT, Heads of Year etc). This means the administration of the bridging unit is paperless and – more importantly - continued access to students’ Year 6/7 work is assured through the e portfolio. Key Learning Outcomes • • • •

How to use social software ( learning platforms and web 2.0 applications) to work collaboratively and creatively with peers How to use an e portfolio to capture, reflect and present their work to appropriate audiences An understanding of the human, cultural and societal issues related to use of technology and practice legal and ethical behaviours
