about the department: The Industrial Design (id) curriculum educates students to identify and resolve design problems – innovatively and with sensitivity to the social, physical and ecological environment. Students learn the traditional values of industrial design and, while building an awareness of materials, gain an in-depth understanding of visual and three-dimensional vocabulary.
bachelor of industrial design program (bid): The fifth year leads
bachelor of fine arts program (bfa):
uate program is oriented toward developing an understanding of design application and theory. Students are given the resources to identify, expand and test personal and professional development through an intensive exploration of design ideas. The study of history and theory is fundamental to the program and is used to complement, support and inform the thesis project.
Students learn to analyze and solve diverse design problems from technical, aesthetic, social and ecological viewpoints. Work progresses from initial developmental drawings, through three-dimensional drawings, mock-ups and models, to working drawings and prototype construction with manufacturing considerations. The curriculum is structured so the skills of drawing, presentation and model-making are taught as an integral part of the design studios. Innovation is stressed, along with the ability to refine formal design issues. Diversification within the curriculum prepares students to enter the field of design at either an industrial or entrepreneurial level.

technology + facilities: Fully
equipped wood, metal and model shops (including vacuform and casting equipment for plastics) provide in-depth construction experience, allowing students to see their designs develop from concept to finished product. Photography studios and gallery space are also available. At the beginning of the sophomore year, every ID major is required to buy the type of laptop computer specified by the department. Software used by majors includes Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, SolidWorks, Rhino and Flash.
