Lesson Plan Template School: Kingston Local Authority Address: King Charles Centre, Kings Charles rd, Surbiton, KT5 9AL Teacher: Andrew Trimble Curriculum Area / Area of Learning: ICT / History / literacy Year: n/a The lesson objective: How to use the visualiser to create an animation 4x JPEG Images of visualiser being used in lesson:
How the visualiser was used? An image of a castle was downloaded from the internet and printed over 2 A4 sheets for the background. A Lego model of soldiers and a siege machine were used for the characters. A storyboard was created on paper to plot the story and the characterisation. This included a short dialogue between the two characters for each image. The images were captured for a freeze frame animation, that means the models were posed, a snapshot and then the models moved slightly. The visualiser was used pointing down at the models at about an angle of 45 degrees. The visualiser was connected to a laptop via the USB lead, no projector was needed at this stage. The Image mate presentation software was run and the live image of the model set came up on screen. The still capture button was used to capture a single image, this is the icon of a camera with a small blue circle.
You then get two frames opening up, one on top of the other, one is the unsaved image (called untitled 1 ) and the other is the live image. You can drag the two images apart. I then went to file / file save as and renamed the image as castle1.jpg. I moved the models slightly and captured another single image, then saved it as castle2.jpg. I saved about 25 images following the story outline in the storyboard The images were then uploaded into Photostory 3, which is a free presentation software which allows a slide show with sound. Some music tracks were also downloaded from Audio Network (free for London schools). A short piece of music was edited in Audacity (also a free download) to create about 5 seconds of intro music and some music for the credits at the end. The short tracks were saved out as MP3 tracks, you need the LAME plug in for Audacity to make this happen. The images were sequenced in Photostory with a 4 second interval for each image, the music tracks uploaded . Then using a microphone the dialogue was recorded in Photostory for each image following the storyboard. The story was tested and then saved out as an wmv movie file. The file was uploaded to the LGFL video server which streams the video live to the learning platform. • • • •

The benefits of the Visualiser to teaching & learning: • Allow pupils to easily create a good quality animation • Good cross-curricular use of ICT which supports improvement in writing (especially boys)
