There are several trends that are changing this situation for the better. • First, markets and technologies are converging • Second, you are increasingly demanding the services of collaboration, communication and workflow within the context of business solutions, not independent of business process. • Third, this is giving rise to aggregate or composite applications.

There are really three main software patterns driving Web 2.0. The first is software as a service. It enables end users to adopt capabilities directly, and gain immediate benefits from it. A lot of Web 2.0 offerings have a very low cost of entry – another distinguishing characteristic. And of course they use the public infrastructure, so anyone in the world can walk up and use it with a web browser. Another key pattern is the use of community mechanisms. Most Web 2.0 businesses use one or another kind of mechanism to enable users to play a part in the service, adding value as they use it. For example, eBay uses ratings to measure the reputations of vendors, which leads to more trustworthy transactions. Others include all kinds of social networking features that help people find each other, and tagging, which helps people filter information for relevance. There are diverse kinds of community mechanisms – only a few are listed here. The third pattern is the simplicity of the user experience and the various interfaces by which developers can access data and capabilities.

Of course, many of IBM’s customers will prefer to use on-premise deployments for much of their IT environment. It turns out that two of the three patterns apply equally well to on-premise software. - While retaining full control over a private infrastructure, enterprises can still take full advantage of community mechanisms and simple interfaces. - Community mechanisms promise to help people within a large organization and across geographic boundaries just as they help to connect people on the public infrastructure. - And simple interfaces promise to increase adoption and help spur situational applications within the enterprise, too. So it makes good sense for IBM to develop Web 2.0 offerings that are delivered both as on-premise licensed software, and as online services.

Lotusphere 2007 Analyst Quotes There's a lot of energy in the Lotus community, both from IBM employees and Lotus customers, around these new versions and new products, and the renewed focus on the Notes brand. Connections and Quickr seem to be aimed directly at reinvigorating Lotus' struggle for the collaboration marketplace with Microsoft - to good effect, according to Burton Group analyst Peter O'Kelly, who told the Reuters news service, "I think IBM is playing offense here.“ Laura DiDio , an analyst at Yankee Group in Boston, said Lotus's continued success was no surprise. "It's [Notes/Domino] a good product," DiDio said. "They are keeping up with the advances in technology; they have the IBM service and support behind them. They have the IBM sales force behind them. They have the IBM marketing behind them. . . . If you're a customer and you don't have to change, why would you?“ "IBM's is the first and only suite that brings together all these capabilities in a single package," says analyst Mark Levitt of IDC. In addition, Lotus Connections offers security, access control, and review features that are important to corporations.

With almost two decades in market, Domino and Notes have proven their strengths in enterprise scaling and security. At the same time, Domino has embraced and integrated all of the major programming methods and standards that have been introduced. With rich support for Java, .net, Web services and other Internet technologies, Domino is a first-class participant in the IBM middleware family. Next up: improvements to the Notes client that introduce matched capabilities at the desktop. 21

Lotus and IBM desktop products are being updated to exploit the latest user experience technology. Major products such as Notes 8 and Sametime are built atop the Eclipse rich client platform (RCP) – or specifically the version of Eclipse RCP that IBM has extended with enterprise-grade management, security and programmability features and markets as IBM Lotus Expeditor. The next-generation common platform is a server managed client with integrated real-time communications. 22

IBM Lotus collaboration holds an inclusive view of the IT world. Like all IBM software, Lotus collaboration embraces heterogeneity and the ability to leverage existing technology investments. Playing well within a standards-based SOA environment helps customers quickly integrate new innovations. Lotus collaboration deliver flexibility at the the desktop, middleware, and enterprise data layers – in other words, the front, middle and back of the system.

Technical drivers are equally important. Mashups let you compose SOA services that extend to the desktop. The application focus of IBM Lotus client software enables an array of application solutions, whose defining characteristics include fast creation, quick deployment, rapid iteration, and are highly maintainable. 56

In the server room it's called middleware and IBM has been the leader in this area for many years. Extending that idea to the client is called a ”mashup” and creates major new opportunities for business and front-end integration. Mashups let multiple disparate systems orchestrate in concert for the specific user's needs, at a specific point in time or stage of a process. Placing communications and collaboration services in the same context “turbocharges” these applications with new productivity and utility. Open and flexible access methods enable an application ecosystem populated with multiple vendors and inhouse development teams.

Business drivers of mashups center on better and faster decisions through consolidated, timely, contextual data. With multiple systems communicating, you get instant notification of deviations and develop better management of exceptions. It becomes easier to monitor and improve daily operations.

The Lotus Strategy does not focus on products or features, or offering roadmaps, except as they support specific elements of the strategy. Instead, the focus is on enabling you to talk about the unmatched Lotus portfolio and how you can help customers solve their collaboration needs.
We’ll discuss how the commitment to open standards enables Lotus to build products that deliver value in context. They integrate with each other, with other systems and infrastructures, and allows developers to extend our capabilities in ways that add business value.
You will see how the Lotus portfolio comprises many capabilities; email, forms, portal, chat, web conferencing , blogging, bookmarking, etc. There is “linked value” in using more than one of our capabilities, but unlike competitors we create choice and flexibility for customers.
You will be able to communicate Lotus leadership and innovation in enterprise collaboration. A quarter century of innovation goes on, with a solid continuum of Notes/Domino, Sametime, and Portal, extended in 2007 with Connections and Quickr. © 2007 IBM Corporation
