TECHNICAL SEMINAR ON

1

WHAT IS HSS  Uses ULTRASONIC WAVES.  Produces sound in the air indirectly.  Provide control of volume and placement.  Highly directional.  Frequency greater then 16khz.  Sound waves travel as concentric hollow spheres.

2

HISTORY  Before 1960 SCUBA DIVERS & NAVAL SUBMARINES used modulated ultrasound for underwater communication.  After 1960-> Non-linear interaction of ultrasound waves.  Panasonic, NC Demon & Ricoh followed this interaction.  End of 1980-> technique was depraved.  1990-> WOODY MORRIS got the solution.  Used by COCA-COLA in TOKYO.  Used by US ARMY.

3

HSS V/S LOUSPEAKER  Loudspeakers are direct radiating whereas HSS are not.  HSS does not need woofers, tweeters & enclosures whereas LS rely on these.  Loudspeakers suffer from crossover distortion & HSS does not.

TECHNOLOGY

 Uses property of air to create new tones.  Converts ultrasonic energy to freq. we can hear.  Sound projection to desired point.  Outstanding flexibility.

6

RANGE Up-to 500 yards.  5-6 inches in diameter.

WORKING Non-linearity of air.  Origin- Tartini tones.  Sound from non-linear air is audible.  Generation of 2 new tones with 2 sources closely placed together.  HSS is the difference.

LISTENING MODES

DIRECT MODE.

VIRTUAL MODE. 10

COMPONENTS Power supply. Audio signal processing. DSB (Dynamic double Side Band ) Modulator. Ultrasonic modulation amplifier. Microcontroller –ATMEGA8515. Transducer technology- uses POLYVINYLIDENE DIFLUORIDE.

11

APPLICATIONS  Computers->HSS for high fidelity audio.  Automobiles->in dome light area.  Home Theater.  Museums, zoos, monuments, aquariums.  Airports, busses, trains.  For public announcements. 12

 In the grocery stores.  In military applications.  Also as a weapon.

13

ADVANTAGES  Highly directional.  Minimizes noise pollution.  Small & Light weight.  No enclosures.  No distortions.  Easy to mount.

DRAWBACK  High cost. 14
