HUMAN REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

MALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM Objectives: On completion of this topic, the student will be able to do the following: – Identifythe major structure of the male reproductive system – Describe the function of each structure

MALE REPRODUCTIVE ORGAN The male reproductive system consists of external & internal organ External genitalia: The male external genitalia is penis & scrotum Penis has two function: 1. To provide a duct to expel urine from bladder 2. To deposit sperm in the female’s vagina to fertilize an ovum

MALE REPRODUCTIVE ORGAN Scrotum is a sac that contains the testes which hangs down between the leg. This protects the testes from injury. Internal genitalia: The internal genitalia include the testes, vas deferens, prostate, seminal vesical, ejaculatory ducts, urethra and accessory gland. The testes are the site of production of the male gametes-the sperm. They make milions of the sperm every day, from the onset of puberty til about the age of seventy. Another function is produce male sex hormone-testosterone

MALE REPRODUCTIVE ORGAN Sperm are store in the epididymis up to 42 days

The sperm

MALE REPRODUCTIVE ORGAN structure Scrotum

function Sac enclosing testes & epididymis

Testes

Site of sperm production & testosterone production

Epididymis

Maturing sperm held in epididymis until ejaculation Conduct sperm from epididymis to urethra during ejaculation

Vas deferens Seminal vesicle Prostate Ejaculatory duct

Produce fructose-rich fluid portion of semen Produces alkaline portion of semen Contracs to force semen to urethra during ejaculation

MALE REPRODUCTIVE ORGAN structure

penis Glans penis

function Copulatory organ inserted into woman’s vagina during intromission

‘head’ of penis contains numerous nerve endings that assist in sexual arousal urethra removes urine from bladder during urination Rectum & anus Portion of intestinal trac that function in excretion of solid wastes Pubic bone Portion of pelvic girdle of skeleton

Female reproductive system

Female reproductive system

The female reproductive system consists of external genitalia, internal genitalia and accessory structures such as the mammary glands (breasts)

The external female reproductive organs

The internal female reproductive organs

Internal genitalia The internal genitalia are the vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes & ovaries. •

Vagina - is a fibromuscular tube that extends from the cervix to the vestibule of the vulva. - receives the penis & semen during sexual intercourse and also provides a passageway for menstrual blood flow to leave the body. - as the lower part of the birth canal

Internal genitalia 1. Uterus Uterus [rahim] is muscular and hollow organ, about size and shape of pear. Size for nulliparous woman : 3“ long x 2” width x 1” thick. Has 3 parts: – Fundus – dome-shape portion, most superior. – Body – most part of uterus. – Cervix – inferior narrow portion, opens into cervi.

Internal genitalia The uterus will expand during a pregnancy to make room for the growing fetus The myometrium is the large middle layer of the uterus- it plays an important role during the birth of a baby.

Internal genitalia 3.Uterine tube/Fallopian tube A pair of tube about 4” long connects superolaterla border of uterus to each ovary. Provides: – a route for sperm to reach ovum, – Transports secondary oocytes and fertilised ova from ovaries to uterus.

Internal genitalia 4.Ovaries Located on either side of the uterus Ovary – a pair of oval organs in female. Produce: Hormones (progesterone, oestrogens, inhibin, relaxin). Produce: Secondary oocytes that develop into mature ova after fertilisation, Estimated about 400,000 eggs are store in each ovary at birth but only one egg becomes ripe each month.
