ACADEMICS AND INDUSTRY – theory and practical

The subjects, papers, issues etc. which we studied a decade ago were taught by Lecturers and Professors who were and are no doubt, knowledge bank for us, and I personally feel very happy to be a student of my Institute. The Institute- Institute of Science and Management, formerly known as Indian Institute of Science & Management, affiliated to the A.I.C.T.E, New Delhi, is located at Ranchi, the Capital of Jharkhand. Why I am proud is because it is one of the oldest Institutes of Eastern India, established in the Year 1985 and is rising day by day. The subjects and modules which I studied was a part of our Syllabus, and when I entered the Hotel industry, I found that I have to learn more to survive, because what we were taught are just the basics and not as per Industry. We were taught how to speak with a guest, what are the basic formalities to be carried out during reservation, foreign exchange, banquet reservation, etc., it is a lot more into the Industry while actually handling those works. Just spending 22 weeks or Six months for Industrial Training in a Hotel is not enough, we should rather go for next Training also. After spending 9 years in different Hotels, I decided to take a break and got the opportunity to work as a Senior Lecturer at the same Institute where I had spent three years during my course of study. I came across very new environment where the in-time is fixed as well as the duty off timing, yes of course the weekly off on Sunday is also there to carry out routine household works. Added leave comes by means of National Holidays, restricted holidays, etc. I used to get enough time to acquaint myself with other friends and relatives. Slowly and gradually I realized that at this age my place is not here and I shall back to the Industry, yes of course, I learnt new topics, several new theories, etc. which would not have been possible without entering into academics. The major difference I felt was that we need much more than just spending years into colleges and Institutes studying the very same subjects and modules. We require much more physical and practical exposure so that a Graduate passing out from an Institution gets acquainted with the work atmosphere as soon as he/she enters into the work area for the first time and the new joinee starts receiving the same warmth as an old employee gets rather being called as a fresher. The author has presented a paper titled “contemporary issues in Indian Hospitality, Tourism And Global Scenario and this paper has been published in ETR Review Of Tourism Research,

volume 6, issue 2 april 2008, and the same paper has been published and released in hospitality industry - contemporary issues" 'bagri & dahiya' (2009). ******************** Mohd.
